Galion escapes Wynford 28-20

Last night I made my first trip to Wynford High School to kick off my 2023 regular-season high school football season. Besides some early rain with some heavy wind, this was a very good trip, with the game being very close.

Early in this season, Galion would make a big statement with their running game when Gabe Ivy followed some nice work from his offensive line on third and eight, where he picked up the first down, with his 9-yard gain.

The Wynford defense would shake off that big play with a sack on Braxton Prosser by Bryce Locker after Prosser bobbled the snap. At the 6:00 minute mark of the opening quarter, Kaiden Blair gallopped for a 17-yard gain. That would be the highlight of the drive.

Ivy would pick up 43 yards on a nice run to help set up his own 1-yard touchdown run after Allen Carver connected on the point after we had a 7-0 game with 1:44 left on the clock. The quarter ended when Elijah Chafin and friends stopped James Rindfuss for a short loss, keeping Uncle Mo. on the Galion side.

Just nine seconds into the second quarter, the crowd would see this become a 14-0 game when Linkon Tyrell blocked a Wynford punt, scooped it up, and waltzed into the endzone.

Galion was back at it again with 7:17 left in the half when big Holden Hunter pulled off a fake punt and plowed up the middle to move the chains. The kid could make a living in short-yardage situations. After Wynford recovered from the fake punt conversion, they would respond with a 69-yard touchdown, with Ashton Warren hitting Rindfuss. The point-after kick from Collin Huslmeyer made this a 14-7 game with 2:50 left in the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, Chafin would use a leap over a would-be tackler to take the ball to the house to make this a 21-7 game.

Warren would connect with Rindfuss with 0:33 seconds left in the half, with the result being a 48-yard catch to make this a 21-14 game. Warren throws a nice deep ball when he gets the chance to throw, and he seems poised in the pocket more times than not.

The third quarter was a turnover show. We had a fumble recovery from Sam Evans to get the show started. Later, there was a pick by Blair, squaring the turnovers in the quarter at one. Ayden Schmidt would recover another fumble for Gailon. We would have some offense in this, with Anthony Evans picking up 30 yards on a nice run for Wynford. For Galion, Prosser would hit Tyrrell for a big 17-yard gain. We also had a sack when Jacob Chambers got to Wynford quarterback Warren.

The fourth quarter started with Prosser getting picked off by Warren. Warren stayed in the spotlight with an 89-yard touchdown run to make this a 21-20 game as the point after kick was missed. Blair slipped to the ground to lose a few yards, then Warren was sacked to bring up a third and sixteen with 2:35 left in the game. Things would get worse for Wynford when Warren slipped but threw the ball before hitting the ground, only to see the pass picked off by Hunter Miniard at the 2:04 mark.

The final score in this one came with 0:55 seconds left on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Prosser to Landon Campbell to give us our final score of 28-20.
