In southwestern Kansas, the Stanton County Trojans hosted the Deerfield Spartans for Homecoming. The first home game of the season, the 1A Trojans were playing 8-man football in 2025. Deerfield made the 60 mile trip with 10 dressed players. After pregame Homecoming festivities including free admission courtesy of Dream First Bank.
The game started off with a bang, as Angel Gonzalez returned the opening kickoff for a score. A quick 8-0 score just 11 seconds in after the two-point conversion. Later in the quarter, Ian Floyd ran in his first of two scores on the night. Both from one yard out. Abraham Ortega added the two-point catch to go up 16-0.
After one serious injury by Deerfield left them with nine players, Ian Floyd added his second score, also while another Deerfield player took a hit near the goal line.
While waiting for medical personnel who had left with the first player, the decision was made to call the game. No extra point attempt was made. And the final score was 22-0 in favor of the host Stanton County Trojans.
Unfortunately, that’s life in less-than-eleven-man football. Small schools and small rosters sometimes cause player availability issues. Stanton County continued with their homecoming program after the second injured player was tended to by the endzone.
Deerfield are 0-3, and if they can play, next host Ashland-Bucklin on October 2nd. Stanton County are now 2-0. Their next game is at Waynoka (Oklahoma) on Friday 9/26. After three more road games, their next, and second only home game, is slated for Halloween night against the Reno County Homeschool team.
