The Kiski School Cougars endured their second straight home setback, losing on Saturday afternoon to visiting Saint James School (Hagerstown, MD).
The Cougars had taken the prior year’s contest in Hagerstown, pulling off a 24-21 win en route to a 6-3 finish. Kiski came up on the losing side of a hard fought 16-14 loss to the Hill School last Saturday evening. They looked to bounce back against the visiting Saints, who came into the game with an 0-2 start.
The contest was very physical, especially in the trenches where physical play was a hallmark of the entire afternoon. Kiski came out in its spread offense and had success early with QB Jaivin Peel throwing darts to his receivers.
Kiski would drive to the Saint James 25 yard line in the first quarter, but K Lewin Tauberschmidt would barely miss a 42-yard FG to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Cougars finally broke through in the second quarter on a nice drive, as the running game and several nice plays by Peel got the Cougars to the Saint James 19 yard-line. 2026 Running back Mason Jones would break a 19-yard run to the end zone to give Kiski the opening score of the game. A Tauberschmidt extra point put Kiski up 7-0.
Kiski would dominate the possession time the rest of the half, but holding penalties plagued the Cougars. Peel would hit Senior WR Noa Seyi on a rollout, and a beautiful catch and run for a 55-yard TD was called back on a hold. Kiski also drove down inside the Saint James 5-yard line. However, Kiski would fail to score, as it ran its last play as time expired and failed to punch the ball in the end zone. The teams would go to the locker room with Kiski up 7-0, but momentum shifting Saint James’ way with the goal line stand.
The second half would be plagued by stoppages due to both teams cramping due to the heat. The third quarter remained scoreless, however Saint James would drive to the Kiski 8 yard line, where kicker Arvid Ryberg would convert a 25-yard field goal to close the score to 7-3. More stalled Kiski drives due to penalties led to another Saint James drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass on a diving catch from QB Jayden Yates to TE Xavier Colbert. The Ryberg extra point would extend the lead to 10-7 Saints. The Cougars would have another opportunity, but the drive again stalled. Saint James would grind out the clock with the running game to seal its first victory of the year, Final Score 10-7.
Kiski is on the road at the Peddie School (0-2) in Highstown, NJ next Saturday.
