Friday Night I made the thirty-minute drive to Thomas Worthington High School to watch the Cardinals battle Marysville Monarchs in a game both teams desperately needed to win. The Cardinals came limping in after being destroyed by Olentangy 52-7 suffering their 2nd defeat of the season. For the Monarchs, they were hoping to get back to .500 on the season and build off their victory last week over Dublin Jerome 34-27.

Things started poorly for the Cardinals on the opening kickoff when ColinScalise fielded the kick took a few steps then tried to throw the ball backward where it went out of bounds at the three-yard line Isaiah Bowers was pulled down by Nick Johnson for a loss of one as the bad luck continued for the Cardinals. Grey Kegley would complete his third pass on the drive when Dominic Parini pulled the rockin for a gain of nine. The drive started slow, then looked to be going in the right direction only to see it end on a penalty and two incompletions.

The Cardinals defense would quickly get the ball back to their offense by forcing a four-and-out on the ensuing drive. The big play for the defense came from Aden Llewellyn who got to Brevin Bourquin before he could take off holding him to no gain and forcing the punt.

The Cardinals would give the ball right back to the Monarchs when Tyler Benner put the ball on the turf and making the recovery for Marysville was Carson Overbay, with 5:26 left in the quarter. The Monarchs would get on the scoreboard on the ensuing drive when Corbin Wallace scored on a four-yard run. Trey Phillips made this a 7-0 game with the first of his six point after kicks.

The Monarchs defense would pick off Kegley at the 2:04 mark of the quarter with Jacob Fisher making the pick. The drive after the pick ended five seconds into the second quarter with Corbin Wallace scoring on a six-yard run. Thomas Worthington used Kegley’s arm to pick up 50 yards with Dominic Parini making two catches. Kegley ended the drive with his 8-yard touchdown pass to Llewellyn. After Maddox LaPard was true on the point after kick we had a 14-7 game, with 8:52 left in the half.

Bourquin used his legs to pick up 25 yards followed by two runs for 24 yards by Matt Krutowskis to help set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Wallace to make this a 21-7 game with 4:31 left on the clock. After quickly dispensing the Cardinals offense the Monarchs would go right back to work on offense. Krutowskis would get 30 yards on a nice run and then cap the drive off with a 17-yard touchdown run to make this a 28-7 game with 0:57 seconds left on the 2nd quarter clock.

JT Hiltscher fielded the 2nd half kickoff on his own 15 and he did not stop running until he was in the end zone making this a 35-7 game just 0:11 seconds into the half. The Monarchs punt return team got into the action when Dominic Brown blocked the Cardinals punt and Brandon Dunn making the recovery. Wallace would total 42 yards on two runs, followed by a 16-yard run by Nathan Wood with 1:10 left in the third.

0:14 seconds into the final frame Bourquin ended the scoring with a 5-yard run making this a 48-7 game. Marysville would get a fumble recovery on a punt when Benner put the ball on the turf and Cameron Smith pounced on it. The last big play in the game came from Marysville when Smith picked off a Kegley pass, with 4:13 left.
