Last night marked my first time taking in a game at Memorial Field in West Milton, Ohio the home of the Milton-Union Bulldogs. Before getting into the game I want to give props to the PA Announcer for supplying me with the rosters of both schools. Also, wanted to say that the crowd was large and very loud, especially the Bulldogs student section.
The Bulldogs would embark on a nice seven-play sixty-four-yard drive that came to a climax with Blake Brumbaugh galloping into the end zone from twenty-six yards out. Nate Morter handle the snap easily allowing Mason Grudich to boom through the pint after kick making the score 7-0 with 5:09 left in the opening quarter.
The Lumberjacks would get a nice seventeen-yard catch from the very talented PJ Bremner at the 3:06 mark of the quarter. The Bulldogs defense would bark loudly when Colton Hultgren got to Benjamin Moreira for a loss of three. The Lumberjacks offense would cut down the Bulldogs defense with Max Parker hauling in a thirty-two-yard touchdown pass to make this a 7-6 game with 31.3 seconds showing on the clock.
Early in the second quarter Michael Elam picked up fourteen yards to move the chains and slowly turn the tide in the favor of the home team. Facing a third and five a little later in the drive with the hard work by the offensive line Ben Schommer moved the chains with his eleven-yard carry. The clock read 8:22 when Brumbaugh was able to avoid a tackler, get the corner, and race into the end zone to make this a 13-6 game that quickly became 14-6 with the point after kick being successful.
Oakwood respond with a sixty-seven-yard touchdown catch from Parker, who was wide open across the middle of the field allowing quarterback Stephen Lauterback to make maybe the easiest touchdown pass of his career. Luke Ruetschle narrowed the lead to one at 14-13 with his point after kick.
The Lumberjacks were able to get the back when Ethan Stone pounced on a fumble by Jordan Foose, with 6:oo left in the half. From there the Bulldogs defense would tighten the leash and shut down the Oakwood offense to put its offense back on the field. Four plays later Elam eased into the end zone from two yards out followed by another point after kick to make this a 21-13 game with 2:43 left in the half.
With 31.7 seconds left in the half the best player, I have watched so far this season Blake Brumbaugh made a thirty-eight-yard catch even though he was tightly covered. From there Morter would find Carter Berner for the six-yard score making this a 28-13 game, after the point after kick was true.
Elam got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs in the third with his thirty-eight-yard run, followed by a fifty-four-yard catch from the PAFOOTBALLNEWS PLAYER OF THE GAME BLAKE BRUMBAUGH. The drive ended when Morter found Connor Yates for the twenty-yard touchdown to give the home team the 35-13 lead. Brumbaugh would electrify the crowd one more time when he made his best catch of the night, a leaping one that resulted in a fifty-three-yard touchdown to make this a 42-13 game. The Bulldogs defense made the last big play of the quarter with Jake Brown planting Moreria into the ground for a loss of one yard.
After the backups got the ball twenty-three-yard line Grudich was called in to hit the forty-yard field goal to give us the final score of 45-13.
If Grudich wants he should be kicking on Saturdays next year. The kid has a strong leg that will get even stronger as he grows as a kicker.
