In the northern reaches of central Montana, six-man football is the norm. Schools so small, the only option for football is six-man. Small towns dotting the landscape between endless grasslands, steppes, and plateaus.
One such game took place on the Fort Belknap Reservation. Home of the Hays-Lodgepole Thunderbirds. As they took on Grass Range/Winnett Rangers on Thursday night. Only 75 miles separate the two schools. And one lone school stands between them in Roy/Winifred. Another six-man co-op. And that’s it.
But it’s still football. Still the homecoming game. Still the fans in the stands and in their cars, honking like mad when the home team scores. Still the same blocking and tackling and hitting and scoring. On a smaller, but maybe more important scale.
Ad though the hoome team struggled to score. They did score. And even in the fourth quarter, the fans went just as crazy as they did for the Junior High game that served as the warm-up before the varsity football game. Grass Range/Winnett, undefeated on the season, won 77-6. While Hays-Lodgepole finished the game with just six healthy players who lasted out the entire game.
