Montana 6-man Spotlight: Grass Range/Winnett v. Harlowton/Ryegate/Judith Gap (Photo Gallery)

In Central Montana, six-man football is a way of life. The small towns, small populations, and expansive terrain leaves very little chance for small towns to field rosters large enough to compete at 11-man, let alone even 8-man at times.

89 miles separates Harlowton and Grass Range. Between them sits just two football teams. Hobson/Moore, playing six-man, and Lewistown’s Fergus High School, the county seat of Fergus County, and largest school hosting 11-man football. Grass Range, Roy/Winifred and the Moore half of Hobson/Moore also call Fergus County home. Winnett School calls Petroleum County home, with a scant 496 residents, Winnett is the only school in the county. The High School boasts an enrollment of just 11 students. Making a co-op with Grass Range imperative for football to ever be an option.

In the recent past, the Grass Range/Winnett co-op struggled with numbers, and helped to form the first 5-team co-op in Montana. When they joined up with Stanford/Geyser/Denton to form Denton/Geyser/Stanford/Grass Range/Winnett. That was short-lived, and soon Grass Range, and Winnett, joined Fergus playing 11-man football. But in 2024, six-man football returned to one of the most picturesque fields in Montana. As the Grass Range Rangers returned to play.

In the game, it was an early back-and-forth matchup until late in the second quarter, Grass Range scored several touchdowns in rapid succession. Giving them a comfortable, 58-30 lead. The second half continued their dominance, scoring four more times, and winning comfortably, 86-37.
