Montana is one of two states that still play state championship games at the home site of one of the two teams playing. The higher seed hosts throughout the playoffs. And in late November, the small town in northeast Montana played host to the Class C-8 State Championship Game. The homestanding Scobey/Opheim Spartans took on the Flint Creek Titans from the co-op between Drummond and Granite High School in Philipsburg.
The Titans made the nearly 500 miles trip, one way, to Scobey for a Saturday afternoon rematch of a 2020 state championship game that the Titans had hosted in Drummond. The Titans came into the game undefeated in state championship games. While Scobey had six prior appearances, going 3-3 overall.
At just after 1pm on the upper plains on a gorgeous, unseasonably warm day with a light breeze, the Spartans and Titans clashed. After a quick Scobey touchdown, the Titans answered and took the lead, 8-6 on the heels of a two-point try. A slim, 8-6 lead going into the second quarter. Aside from a quick touchdown when the Spartans began cycling through their starters to get everyone some championship game playing time, it was all Scobey Spartans. Winning, 48-16 for their first state title in over 20 years.
Below is the scoring summary (auto-correct found Phillipsburg more appropriate and I didn’t catch it throughout the day). Phtotos from the game follow with a link to more photos.
