Abdiel Gonzalez TD Run

New Dorp Central Cougars v. Port Richmond Raiders
Staten Island Advance Stadium, Staten Island, NY

On a cool summer day, New Dorp’s seniors were determined to make a statement. However, it was Junior QB Abdiel Gonzalez who would steal the show. After falling behind, as they did the previous week, by two touchdowns, Gonzalez’s legs would reel off three touchdowns on the ground. Closing out New Dorp’s 2021 Spring Season with a winning record of 3 wins to 2 losses.

After a scoreless first quarter feeling each other out, Port Richmond’s offense finally moved the ball effectively and converted a 4th down play from the 5 yard line into a TD from QB Jake Ficken to Tayshaun Lewis. Tayvon Claxton would run in the conversion to take an 8-0 lead early in the second frame. But that wasn’t his only score. Claxton would return a punt later in the half for a TD. Cutting from right to left on the short scamper. Ficken’s pass to Jayden Williams would double the score, 16-0.

As New Dorp did last week against Susan Wagner, a two score deficit late in the half was the wake-up call they needed. Gonzalez’s rough passing attack continued to be ineffective. But his feet more than made up for it. To go along with his 3 of 6 passing, Gonzalez ran for 233 yards on 28 attempts. His first TD being under high pressure to make something of a forgettable first half. And he did, with a 6 yard run for six, and did it himself for the conversion.

With breathing room in the second half, New Dorp came out on fire. A quick TD on 69 seconds into the half, on a long 35 yard run to the right side put the Central Cougars in position to tie the game. And Gonzalez did that on the untimed conversion attempt. Now playing loose, like it was a new game with 23 minutes to go, Port Richmond was unable to execute offensively. New Dorp’s defensive unit played with some fire. Including swarming tackler Matthew Ruggiero, who led the team with 8 tackles.

Anthony Luna (11 for 82), Brandon Morris (2 for 4), Yonathan Vitale (1 for 4) would finish out the rushing yards for New Dorp. Jake Ficken (5 for 41), Tayvon Claxton (10 for 40), Wadell Tafe (4 for 22) and Robert Foye (2 for 13) accounted for 116 of Port Richmond’s 119 yards on the ground. Ficken would throw for 150 yards on 16 or 24 passing, compared to Gonzalez’s 3 of 6 for 39 yards for New Dorp.

New Dorp is off next weekend as their game with Petrides is cancelled. Meanwhile, Port Richmond closes out their road-only schedule at Curtis on Saturday, the 19th at noon.
