Section 6 Class A 1st Round Preview

Williamsville East Flames #8 (3-5) at McKinley Macks #1 (5-3)

The Flames finished 3-5 but 2-3 in A2 which earned them the last playoff spot. Unfortunately, that earns them a first round matchup with McKinley. Will East will need Senior Giovanni Frysz to improve on his 3.4 yards per carry average in the playoffs.

For the Macks, it’s the Class A top seed after starting the season 4-0 before losing 3 of their last 4 but getting a huge week 8 win over Clarence. McKinley will look to its star Junior Kalaugn Ford who leads them in rushing and passing yards.

For Will East to win: They will need some splash plays and at least a few turnovers from the Macks to have a shot.

For McKinley to win: The game plan should be to do what they have all season, play punishing defense and let Kalaugn Ford do his thing.

Take the Macks

Williamsville North Spartans #7 (5-3) at Sweet Home Panthers #2 (7-1)

Williamsville North fought their way to a 5-3 finish but only 3-2 in the A1 conference. The Spartans need more of the defense that led them past McKinley and Starpoint. Senior Dakari Norman will eclipse 1000 yards rushing on the season in this game and will need to set the tone for Will North.

Sweet Home only lost one game this season and that was to AA Orchard Park. The Panthers rolled through the Class A schedule and looked dominate in the process. Sweet Home is led by Senior Rocco Panepinto who set the Sweet Home season record for Touchdown passes with his 24 on the season.

For Will North to win: The Spartans have beat very good teams this season, the key to those victories was their defense, they will need its best performance of the year to have a shot in this one.

For Sweet Home to win: More of the same from the regular season.

Take Sweet Home

Starpoint Spartans #6 (4-4) at Clarence Red Devils #3 (6-2)

The Spartans started off hot with a 3-0 start but lost 4 of the last 5 to back their way into the 6 seed. They played a very good game with Sweet Home and lost by 7. Starpoint is on the cusp of being a real contender in class A and can contribute that success to Senior Lucas Lombardo and his 74 tackles, as well as AJ Anslem who has 34 catches for 586 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Clarence, the defending section champions, have had an up and down season. A loss to Monroe started the season off with some self-discovery which led to 6 straight wins including 4 in class A. The week 8 loss to McKinley shook up the class A seeding. The Red Devils will look to star Senior Bryce Tubin and his 1784 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to continue to lead them.

For Starpoint to win: They will need to contain the Clarence offensive machine and keep pace early to have a chance.

For Clarence to win: Bryce Tubin received a D1 offer last week and he should be the key to victory Friday.

Take Clarence

West Seneca West Warhawks #5 (4-4) at Kenmore West Blue Devils #4 (6-2)

West Seneca West finished 4-4 on the strength of a 2-game winning streak to finish the regular season. Suffer a close loss to McKinley and a competitive loss to Clarence should give more hope to the Warhawks. WSW is lead by Senior Cayden Stupak with 984 passing yards and 312 rushing yards. Stupak has 21 touchdowns on the season.

For Kenmore West it was a successful season finishing 6-2 and losses to Clarence and Sweet Home. The Blue Devils were leaded by a 2 headed monster offensively with Senior Deontay Rodgers and his 853 all-purpose offensive yards and Junior Harlem Brannon and his 964 all-purpose offensive yards. The two also combined for 23 touchdowns this season.

For WSW to win: The Warhawks will need to slow down the Kenmore West offensive assault and hope that they don’t get behind early.

For Kenmore West to win: Simply put, get the ball to the playmakers and reap the benefits.

Take Kenmore West in a good one
