Section 6 Class B 1st Round Preview

Maryvale Flyers #8 (5-3) at Pioneer Panthers #1 (8-0)

The Flyers opened their season with a tough loss 3 hours from home against the defending Class D State Champions Tioga. Only 2 losses the rest of the way, week 5 to Olean and week 8 to Lackawanna. If not for the Olean loss this team would be a top 5 seed. Maryvale is led by Senior Brayden Tryon and his 462 yards on the ground and Senior Jaxsyn Moritz with his 1258 yards and 17 touchdowns passing the ball.

Pioneer was dominate this season with only two games even within reach, week 1, in a 7 point win over Grand Island and in week 4, with a 2 score victory over South Park. The Panthers are led by Senior Karter Giboo who as 782 rushing yards, 398 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns on the season.

For Maryvale to win: The Flyers can play with anyone and will need to control the tempo of the game to prevent Pioneer from getting into a rhythm.

For Pioneer to win: The Panthers need to make sure their star Giboo touches the ball 25+ times and that they do not let Maryvale make it a slugfest type of game.

Take Pioneer but this one might be close

Grand Island Vikings #7 (5-3) at Lackawanna Steelers #2 (8-0)

The Vikings finished 5-3 with close losses to Pioneer and Sweet Home. The Vikings can compete with anyone in class B and could be very dangerous to most teams with such a low seed. Grand Island is led by Senior Michael Sole with 864 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Undefeated, powerhouse Lackawanna rolls into the post season with the 2 seed. The Steelers only had two challenges all season. A week 5 game with Class D CSP that they won by 10 points. As well as a Week 8 game with Maryvale that the Steelers won 14-7. Sophomore star Tyrone Clark Jr lead the way on offense with 1598 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Defensively two Senior big dogs lead the way for Lackawanna, Laferald Hines Jr with 12.5 sacks and Sam Ikeguwonu with 15 sacks.

For Grand Island to win: The Vikings will have to play their best defensive game of the season to slow down Lackawanna.

For Lackawanna to win: Up tempo, aggressive, and punishing football, just like the rest of the season.

Take the Steelers in this one

Williamsville South Billies #5 (5-3) at South Park Sparks #4 (7-1)

Williamsville South went 4-1 in conference in route to a solid season. Led by Junior Amir Ceasar and his 891 yards rushing, the Billies are a solid offensive team. The Billies offense was the key to man victories this season including the big wins over Akron and Grand Island.

South Park is certainly seeded lower than their capable of finishing this postseason. The Sparks only loss of the year was a two-score setback against undefeated Pioneer. South Park has the sections top rusher in Senior Adam Nunes who had 1931 yards on the ground and 27 touchdowns this season. Maybe more impressive than that is Nunes average yards per carry is 14.4 yards this season.

For Will South to win: The Billies have to find a way to contain Nunes and should absolutely sell out to stop him and put 8 or 9 in the box for most of the game.

For South Park to win: The Sparks were excellent all season defensively, they need that to continue and they need to give the ball to Nunes and let him do his thing.

Take South Park

Olean Huskies #6 (6-2) at Health Sciences Falcons #3 (5-3)

The Huskies were my pre-season dark horse team to watch. No one expected them to be as good as they were beating Maryvale and Depew and playing a competitive game with Lackawanna. Led by a budding star in Junior quarterback Joe Mest, the Huskies amassed 197 point through 8 games and seemed like they had not yet hit their peak.

Health Sciences began the year 3-1 but went 2-2 during the seasons second half. Key wins over Iroquois and Will South powered the Falcons into the 3 seed. Health Sciences defense was outstanding this season led by Senior Jeremiah Shuford and his 118 tackles. The Falcons showed flashes of excellence but a week 8 loss to Grand Island removes them from the top tier of class B entering the playoffs.

For Olean to win: The same formula that beat Maryvale is the key to this one, play excellent defense, set the tempo offensively and trust your quarterback to make good decisions.

For Health Sciences to win: Down field coverage has to be elite to slow down Mest and Olean’s developing offense.

Take the Huskies in the upset
