Section 6 Class C 1st Round Preview

Portville Panthers #8 (6-2) at Newfane Panthers #1 (7-1)

Portville / Cuba Rushford / Hinsdale had a very strong performance in the Class C South this season. The Panthers finished the season on an impressive 5 game winning streak including wins over Southwestern and Chautauqua Lake. Senior Quarterback Eli Sleggs lead the Panthers with 1076 yards passing and 10 touchdowns.

Newfane is tough as nails. Propelled by a 21-20 win over Akron in week 4 the Panthers were impressive. A slip up for Newfane came when they loss 7-6 at Alden. They are led by Junior Mac Capen with 508 yards passing and 685 yards rushing.

For Portville to win: Portville can win this game if they can drag Newfane into an old school slobber knocker type game.

For Newfane to win: The Panthers must avoid allowing Portville to hang around, a 2-3 score lead is required entering the 4th quarter to prevent the upset.

I will take Portville with the upset

Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles #7 (4-4) at Salamanca Warriors #2 (8-0)

Cleveland Hill finishes 4-4 with one loss being a one point loss to Newfane. The Golden Eagles were led by Senior Douglas Hunt with 1043 yards and 13 touchdowns and Senior Aidan Lyons with 45 tackles on the season.

Salamanca was nothing short of excellent this season. They look to be eyeing another state playoff run after last years semi final loss. The Warriors only close game this season was a one score victory over Portville. Salamanca is led by Senior Linebacker Zackary Trietley who recorded 102 tackles and 4 sacks, as well as Senior Xavier Peters with 815 yards rushing and 124 receiving yards as well as 14 touchdowns.

For Clev Hill to win: The Golden Eagles need to win the turnover battle and control the tempo if they want any shot at the Warriors.

For Salamanca to win: Simply let this team perform. Get the ball in the hands of Xavier Peters and Isaac Maddox and watch the points pile up.

Take Salamanca big in this one

Alden Bulldogs #5 (7-1) at Chautauqua Lake / Westfield / Brocton Eagles #4 (6-2)

The Bulldogs were stout in the regular season with their only loss coming to Medina in week 6. Alden has playmakers on offense such as Senior Nick Wypij who had 587 yards rushing. The Bulldogs best attribute is their defense with Junior’s Aiden Dolliner and Jonathon Koch both racking up 40+ tackles on the season.

Chautauqua Lake / Westfield / Brocton have finally done it, they made the playoffs, but not only that they are seeded high enough to host a playoff game. Coach Ryan Gibbs has the Eagles humming lead by a division 1 AA capable talent in Senior Mason Maring. Maring has 57 tackles, 3 sacks and dozens of pancakes. The Eagles star is a game changer and can disrupt any drive similar to the impact Dexter Lawrence can have on an NFL game.

For Alden to win: They have to run away from Maring and not allow him to take over the game.

For the Eagles to win: Pound the rock with Bensink and let Gibbs and Jacobson find a few big plays to help Maring out and allow the defense to play with a lead.

I must go with the Eagles in this one

Falconer / Cassadaga Valley / Maple Grove Herd #6 (6-2) at Medina Mustangs #3 (7-1)

Falconer / Cassadaga Valley / Maple Grove shocked and awed their way to 6-2 on the season even with a ton of injuries. Only losing to Juggernaut Salamanca and Chautauqua Lake, the Herd was explosive and fun to watch. They were led by Senior Jacob Roth and his 422 passing and 527 rushing yards.

Medina was supposed to be down in 2024, but someone forgot to tell the Mustangs that. They only loss to Newfane in route to an excellent 7-1 finish. The Mustangs were lead by outstanding Junior Christian Moss with 1641 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on an average of 11.1 yards per carry.

For the Herd to win: More tough defense like all season will be the key.

For Medina to win: The Mustangs need to give Moss 25+ touches and limit turnovers to win this one.

Take Medina.
