Niagara-Wheatfield and North Tonawanda competed Wednesday night for the Chuck Funke Bowl. A post-season tournament in Section VI for teams that did not qualify for the sectional playoffs. In Class A, only two teams participated, and the championship game was played at Niagara-Wheatfield’s Turf Field just outside Sanborn, New York.
Dee Lewis scored twice for the home squad in the second half. Catching touchdowns of 19 and 45 yards in the third quarter. Chase Richards opened the scoring for Niagara-Wheatfield in the first quarter, on a short one yard run.
Up 21-0, the Falcon defense faltered, and North Tonawanda found the endzone from 8 yards out via Christian Earnst’s feet. A successful two-point conversion cut the deficit to 21-8. Earnst added another score with 7 seconds left on another short run. But not before Christian Turner found the endzone for the Falcons from 5 yards out. Niagara-Wheatfield wins, 28-15 and claims the Class A Chuck Funke Bowl title.
