The scene was set at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh — a crisp, cloudy afternoon, wind at the southwest at 11 mph, and the Panthers hopes riding high with a 7-2 record. The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 9, walked in with something to prove. From the first snap, Notre Dame wasted no time. On their very first play from scrimmage, star running back Jeremiyah Love exploded through the line, spun away from a defender, and raced 56 yards for a touchdown. Just like that, it was 7-0 in the blink of an eye. The momentum doubled almost instantly. On Pittsburgh’s next possession, Notre Dame’s defense delivered. Safety Tae Johnson snagged an errant pass and returned it 48 yards for another score. Suddenly it was 14-0, and the Panthers looked stunned.
Pitt managed to get on the board with a field goal in the 2nd quarter, but Notre Dame answered with a smooth drive capped by a pinpoint 25-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Carr to Malachi Fields. At halftime it was 21-3, and the Irish had the upper hand.
In the third quarter, Notre Dame extended the lead again — trick plays, great execution, and the Panthers’ defense simply could not keep pace. One of the more bizarre plays: after a Pitt touchdown, Notre Dame returned the 2-point conversion attempt for a score of their own, making it essentially a 4-point swing. The score moved to 30-9 and Pitt’s chances faded.
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Notre Dame had locked up the game. Final score: 37-15. The Irish improved to 8-2, while Pitt fall to 7-3 and saw their 5-game winning streak snapped.
