A 13-13 deadlock was settled with 1:17 left in the game when Mason Haines scored his second touchdown of the game for the Smithville Smithies. The Smithies weathered the storm of the final possession by LaBrae, including a personal foul after a Smithville defender spiked the ball in frustration after failing to corral a potential interception.

Haines opened the game with a 9-yard run on 4th and 1 early in the game. In the second quarter, LaBrae would score twice in rapid succession. First on Josh Biery’s first of two field goals in the game from 27 yards out. And immediately following an onside kick recover, Owen Boone went free up the middle on a 46 yard touchdown reception to take the lead, 10-7.

Biery added his second field goal midway through the third quarter. And the 13-7 lead held as Jace Leach found the endzone for the visiting Smithies, from 4 yards out, with 5:01 left in the third frame. The point after attempt was possibly deflected, saving LaBrae’s position, 13-13.

In the fourth quarter, prior to the final Smithville possession, LaBrae faced a 4th down from the Smithville 34 yard line. Faced with the potentially long field goal attempt, or a short punt to cede possession, LaBrae opted for a fourth down conversion but the pass up the middle fell incomplete. Setting up the 64 yard game-winning drive.

Smithville will take on Kirtland next Friday night in Kirtland.
