Protime Predictions

| September 8, 2022

The other day Protime had to run some errands for the lovely Mrs. Protime.  His last stop was the local grocery mart.  When he goes to the grocery mart, he spends the majority of time in the cereal aisle and the baked goods aisle.  Mrs. P can always find him in one of those two aisles when they get separated because Protime is a cereal and baked goods guy.

As Protime was checking out at the grocery mart, he ran into his long-time weight lifting buddy, Rich.  All of a sudden, a booming voice yells out, “what kind of gun are you carrying?”  Protime and Rich look around to see a guy over by the fruit section pointing to Rich who has a permit to carry.  Not wanting to attract attention and scare anyone or have potential robbers single him out first, Rich yells back and says, “it’s a super soaker sir.”

This week’s games include some marvelous match-ups.  Every game being previewed involves unbeaten teams and most are ranked in the latest PFN rankings poll.  Protime went 16-8 last week and is now 37-13 (.740) for the young season.  The Darling of Discernment is throwing caution to the wind with his picks this week.

Erie McDowell 2-0 @ North Allegheny 2-0 – It should be a good one in Wexford Friday night.  The Trojans of McDowell march into town after beating a pair of quality opponents from out of state.  Led offensively by RB Artis Simmons and QB Ben Moore, McDowell has racked up 90 points.  Simmons has 381 yards rushing with 3 TDs, while Moore has 264 yards passing and 4 TDs.  The Trojans have an excellent kicker in Alex Sontheimer who has kicked 2 FGs already.  The Tigers have some offense themselves led by QB Logan Kushner and WR Khiryn Boyd.  Kushner has thrown for 368 yards and 4 TDs.  Boyd has caught 12 passes for 233 yards and a score.  Protime is taking McDowell (#6 in 6A) to beat North Allegheny (#9 in 6A) by a score of 45-42.

Cumberland Valley 2-0 @ Spring Ford 2-0 – Cumberland Valley (#10 in 6A) won by 4 points last year and this year the game should be just as close.  QB Isaac Sines leads his high-flying Eagles with 216 yards passing and 3 TDs, plus he has 222 yards rushing with another 3 goal line crossings.  J.D. Hunter is a dangerous return man for the visitors.  The Spring Ford Rams counter with a very good QB of their own in Matt Zollers.  He has 418 yards passing and has 7 TDs through the air.  WR Zach Zollers has 11 receptions for 182 yards and 3 scores.  Luke Pajovich is the Rams’ top tackler.  Take the Eagles by four again, 31-27.

Homer Center 2-0 @ Penns Manor 2-0 – Homer Center (#6 in 1A) has some big boys on the front line, but Penns Manor has a couple of big’uns themselves.  The visiting Wildcats have Landon Hill to carry the mail on offense.  He has tallied 295 rushing yards and 7 TDs to date.  Mason Bell is a beast on defense for H.C.  The Comets like to run the ball as well.  QB Max Hill has 263 yards and 5 TDs toting the rock, while RB Justin Marshall has accumulated 235 yards on the ground and a pair of scores.  Carter Smith is a machine on defense with 28 tackles in 2 games.  Even though Homer Center beat the Manor by 31 points last year, Protime is taking the Comets in a bit of an upset 28-27.

Bethlehem Catholic 2-0 @ Nazareth 2-0 – Could Beca High be bringing back the swag from a few years ago?  Could Nazareth (HM in 6A) be a player in 6A?  The answer to both questions is yes, at least in the early going.  Beca High’s QB Luke Thomas and RB Rahmel Terry are carrying the load so far.  Thomas has 246 yards passing with 2 TDs.  Terry has crossed the goal line 3 times.  For any football or wrestling fans out there who didn’t know, Nazareth’s quarterback, Sonny Sasso, is Sammy Sasso’s younger brother.  (Sammy wrestles for Ohio State and did play football once upon a time.)  Sasso has thrown for 490 yards and 5 touchdowns.  His favorite target is Mason Kuehner who has 246 yards receiving and a couple of TD catches.  Nazareth won by one-point last year.  In a battle of colored birds, it’ll be the Nazareth Blue Eagles 34 and the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks 24.

Belle Vernon 1-0 @ McKeesport 2-0 – Here’s a good one out of the Pittsburgh area.  The Belle Vernon Leopards (#1 in 3A) are a very talented football team.  They have a D-1 running back in Quinton Martin, a big line, and a lot back from a one-loss season last year.  On top of that, their enrollment dropped them from 4A to 3A this year.  Martin scored 3 touchdowns last week against Laurel Highlands.  QB Braden Laux had 166 yards running and passing combined, scoring twice on runs.  The Tigers (#3 in 4A) are talented also.  The McKeesport flex-bone offense features Bobbie Boyd who has 279 yards and 5 TDs to date.  He also has 3 picks on defense in 2 games.  Shane McGraw is another one to watch on that Tiger defense.  Belle Vernon was too physical for McKeesport last year, but Protime has the Tigers getting a measure of revenge by upending the Leopards 22-21.

Selinsgrove 2-0 @ Jersey Shore 2-0 – The Seals visit the Bulldogs at the ‘Shore.  Mark Pastore barks signals for the Seal offense.  He has 221 yards passing.  On defense, Selinsgrove has a good defense and it is led by Corey Rumberger.  Brady Jordan barks signals for the Bulldogs.  He has had 11 completions and 4 have gone for TDs.  RB Hadyn Packer has scored 7 touchdowns while rushing for 257 yards.  Brodie Herr heads up a tenacious Bulldog defense.  Jersey Shore (#7 in 4A) beat the Seals twice last year.  They win again 28-17.

Sharpsville 2-0 @ Reynolds 2-0 – Sharpsville (#7 in 2A) brings a very versatile QB into Greenville in the person of Caullin Summers.  He has thrown for 498 yards and 4 scores.  He has rushed for 193 yards and a trio of TDs.  His top target is Garen Levis who has hauled down 13 passes for 201 yards and 2 TDs.  Christian Snyder leads the Blue Devils in tackles with 25 and 6 of those are for losses.  The Reynolds Raiders (#3 in 1A) are led by a superb running back in Jalen Wagner.  Mr. Wagner has rambled all over the field in 2 games chalking up 588 yards and 7 TDs.  To keep the other teams honest, QB Brayden McCloskey can throw.  He has 279 yards and 3 TD tosses.  Protime’s crystal ball has it, Reynolds 36 Sharpsville 28.

Shippensburg 13 Spring Grove 10 – In a low-scoring affair, the Greyhounds scoot by the Rockets.
