A few days ago, Protime debated with himself whether he should take a walk since it had quit raining. He elected to venture out into the cold, damp, dark early morning. As he strolled down the sidewalk on the boulevard near his home, a truck splashed Protime with an immense amount of water. It’s amazing how much water a semi can displace!
Later, when Protime was about a mile from home, a bird made a rather large deposit on Protime’s WesternPAFootball.net ballcap. Soon after, when Protime jogged across the street to beat the traffic, he stepped in a gigantic mud puddle soaking his shoes and socks to the point where they squeaked with each step he took. Finally, Protime was hit with a torrential downpour just blocks from home. As he stepped into the house, Mrs. Protime met him at the door and declared, “Not in my house are you coming, dripping watery muck everywhere!”
It’s playoff time and that’s what the home teams are saying, “Not in our house are we going to lose.” Whether Protime picks all home teams remains to be seen. Protime finished the regular season 198-52 (.792) by going 19-5 last week. And now it’s time for the Prince of Prognostication’s predictions, which includes games randomly picked from all corners of the state.
Woodland Hills 4-6 @ Mars 9-1 – Don’t let Woody High’s record fool you. They’ve won 4 of their last 6, losing only to 6A Seneca Valley and by one point to West Allegheny. The Wolverines, are led by RB Will Clark (7 touchdowns) and QB Gavin Judson who has thrown for 7 TDs. The Fightin’ Planets of Mars depend a lot on the legs of Garrett Reinke, who has 1,747 yards and 20 goal line crossings. They have a very capable QB in Tyler Kowalkowski, who has thrown for over 1,000 yards and 11 TDs. Planet kicker, Blake Edwards (not to be confused with the Blake Edwards of Pink Panther fame), has booted 39 of 40 extra points and is 3 for 3 in the field goal department. Protime started to pull the trigger on the upset, but just couldn’t. Mars 17 Woody High 13.
Central Bucks East 6-4 @ Coatesville 10-0 – The Patriots have some weapons in QB Evan O’Donnell, RB Jake Ventresca, and WR Chris Lochetta. O’Donnell has hurled the rock for 1,436 yards and 13 TDs. Ventresca has rumbled with the rock for almost a thousand yards and has entered the end zone on 9 occasions. Drew Bethke heads up CBE’s defense that must contain an offensive juggernaut. The Red Raiders are that juggernaut and are led by QB Ricky Ortega (1,736 yards-29 TDs), RB Aaron Young (996 yards-18 TDs), and WR Dapree Bryant (41 catches for 807 yards scoring 12 TDs). Than Hylen is 50 of 50 in extra points. Nik Thompson is a key component on defense. The Patriots may stay close for a while, but Coatesville pulls away to win 42-14.
Oil City 9-1 @ General McLane 7-2 – The Oilers’ Christian Cole has scored a whopping 42 touchdowns while rambling for 2,900 yards. CJ Shreffler leads the Oilmen in tackles. McLane is a running team too as they have covered 3,354 yards on the ground to date. Ben Howe-Jones is their sole 1,000-yard gainer so far and has scored 10 touchdowns. Luke Dillen has the most TDs of all the running backs with 11. The Lancers gave the Oilers their only loss 17-12, but Protime feels Oil City will make the adjustments allowing them to win 26-24.
Hempfield 5-5 @ Harrisburg 9-1 – Hempfield has a solid signal caller in Colin Peters who has thrown for 1,349 yards and 12 TDs, plus he can run. WR Darien Ressler has snabbed 41 passes for 776 markers and 9 scores. RB Matt Heuston has tallied 13 TDs. The Cougars’ premier offensive threat is QB Kane Everson. Mr. Everson has passed for 1,984 yards and 26 TDs. When he decides to take off running he has 827 yards and 7 goal line crossings. Donte Kent has 630 yards receiving plus 10 scores. RB Jahmir Plant has 8 touchdowns. Harrisburg has 23 interceptions with Elijah Scott plucking 6 himself. The Black Knights have lost to some pretty tough teams whose combined record is 41-9. Make that another loss to another good team. Harrisburg 34 Hempfield 14.
Imani Christian Academy 7-3 vs. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 9-1 @ Moon – The air will be filled with footballs in this one sports fans. Should be a fantastic game. Imani has freewheeling Israel Reed passing the pigskin for 2,682 yards and 30 scores to date. He is a threat to run too. His favorite wide receivers are Rahmon Hart, Jr. (56 snags for 1,274 yards and 15 TDs) and Dashaun Wright (42 grabs for 1,027 yards and 13 TDs). RB Juaron Thompson has scored 7 times. Thompson is also the top tackler on defense for the Saints. OLSH counters with QB Tyler Bradley and his 2,574 yards passing. He’s thrown 33 touchdown passes. Richard Banks is the premier receiver with 43 catches for 697 yards and 8 TDs. Rico Tate has 7 TD receptions. RB Austin Wigley is a big contributor too with his 16 total touchdowns. Protime has the OLSH Chargers 20-14 because of their defense.
West Shamokin 5-4 @ Bellwood-Antis 9-1 – The Wolves have a balanced attack with Tyler Nightcap at QB tossing the agate for 994 yards-14 scores and Brendon Mondi at RB with 1,067 yards-15 TDs. Jaiden Haswell has 44 receptions for 616 yards and scored 9 times. West Shamokin’s defense is led by Tyler Sweeney and his amazing 122 tackles, plus Nightcap’s 7 INTs. The Mighty Blue Devils have won 9 in a row. They are led by QB Shawn Wolfe’s 986 yards passing and 522 yards rushing with 10 TDs. RB Alex Frederick has 11 TDs. Nick Plank leads a stingy B-A defense. Protime says Wolfe and the Blue Devils defeat the Wolves 22-16.
Slippery Rock 6-3 @ Harbor Creek 8-2 – Vito Pilosi can beat you with his arm or legs. The Rock’s QB has thrown for 949 yards and 10 scores. He has also rushed for 682 yards and 8 TDs. RB Kaleb Kamerer leads the Rockets with 751 yards and 10 tallies. The Huskies are having a banner year, led by RB Tyler East (1,244 yards-13 TDs) and QB Casey Smith’s 9 TD tosses. Cody Smith is the main target for Smith. Slippery Rock’s defense led by David Duffalo will hold the Huskies down and allow the offense to do enough to be triumphant, 20-9.
Towanda 4-6 @ Mount Carmel 8-2 – Tanner Kunkle leads the Black Knight offense. The junior signal caller has accounted for 1,646 yards and 17 touchdowns passing and running the ball. Preston Rogers is the mainstay on defense for Towanda. The Red Tornadoes have Tom Reisinger throwing the rock for 1,286 yards and 16 touchdowns so far. RB John Ayres is a 1,000-yard rusher and has found the end zone 12 times. Jack Chapman is the top receiver for the home team with 6 TDs. Nick Troutman heads up a tough MC defense. The Red Tornadoes spin out a victory over the Black Knights, 33-22.
Coudersport 5-4 @ Redbank Valley 7-3 – Protime is going to journey down Route 28 to witness what he thinks will be a nail-biter. Coudy is all about running. The Falcons RB, Stephen Kelly leads the team with 1,071 yards and 17 scores. QB Hayden Keck has 9 TDs rushing. Elijah Ayers is a key on Coudy’s ‘D’. Redbank’s QB Keaton Kahle has 1,258 yards passing and 14 TDs. WR Hunter Martz leads in catches and WR Ethan Hetrick in TDs. Travis Crawford is a good one on the Bulldog defense. Protime envisions RBV eking out a 34-32 win.
The Others:
Delone Catholic 28 Upper Dauphin 22 – The Squires get the upper hand on the Trojans early and hold on for a York Catholic rematch. (York gave them their only loss.)
Belle Vernon 28 Beaver 21 – The Leopards and the Bobcats in an exciting cat fight with the Leopards prevailing.
State College 38 Mifflin County 13 – The Little Lions devour an up and coming Husky squad.
Penns Valley 36 Southern Huntingdon 23 – With the famous Ram headbutt, the Rams send the Rockets into orbit.
Valley View 31 Abington Heights 11 – Valley View’s Cougars, PFN’s #1 AAAA team, snuffs out the Comets with a workmanlike performance.
Bellefonte 37 Bradford 25 – The Red Raiders top the Owls to move on and play Clearfield next week.
Clearfield 35 DuBois 17 – The Bison top the Beavers to move on and play Bellefonte next week.
North Penn 28 Ridley 14 – The Knights are the top seed in D-1 and they are victorious over a game Ridley Green Raider eleven, who have won 5 straight.
Penn-Trafford 27 North Hills 7 – Watch for the Warriors to possibly make some noise in the D-7 playoffs. The Indians of North Hills are the first to fall.
Smethport 35 Union-AC Valley 12 – The Hubbers continue their winning ways up in D-9 as they run over the Golden Falcon Knights.
Bethlehem Freedom 28 Bethlehem Liberty 17 – In a rivalry game last week, Liberty upset Freedom giving the Patriots their first loss. Freedom didn’t have to wait long for the rematch with the Hurricanes.
Seneca Valley 17 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 15 – The Raiders exact some revenge in defeating the Vikings. PCC beat them early in the year 20-14.
North Catholic 26 Quaker Valley 23 – This one Protime had to flip a coin as the Trojans and the Quakers are hard to decipher. It could go either way, but NC defeats last year’s state champs to advance.
Garnet Valley 31 Pennsbury 13 – The Jaguars take down the Falcons. Many are saying Garnet Valley may pose the only threat to beating top-ranked Coatesville.
Bald Eagle Area 24 Huntingdon 20 – The Bald Eagles topped Huntingdon’s Bearcats 30-7 at the beginning of October. There is no reason they can’t win again even if they have lost their RB for the year.
Shippensburg 37 Northeastern 30 – The Greyhounds outrun the Bobcats in an interesting D-3 contest.
Claysburg-Kimmel 20 Conemaugh Valley 8 – The Bulldogs swat the Blue Jays.
Sharpsville 40 Northwestern 20 – The Blue Devils are too much for the Wildcats.
Upper Dublin 34 Phoenixville 24 – Protime loves the nickname ‘The Phantoms’ and the color purple. But alas, it’s the Cardinals who will be better in this game over the Phoenixville Purple Phantoms.
Steel Valley 22 Beth-Center 12 – The Ironmen have to be one of the favorites to win the AA D-7 title. They score a win over a good Bulldog team.
West Middlesex 48 Union City 34 – The Big Red pulls out the victory over the Bears in a high scoring affair.
