Canfield – Billy Skripac and Shane Lindstrom lead South Range past Springfield.

Following a 13-1 season last year, South Range picked up where they left off with a 37-7 mercy rule victory over rival Springfield High School.

“When you have a rivalry like this one where both communities follow their teams well, it leads to a great atmosphere. I’m very proud of how we played tonight against a good Springfield team,” said South Range head coach Dan Yeagley. “They’re a better football team than people think this year. We knew it would be a hard-fought battle, and we needed to play our best for 48 minutes.”

South Range scored on four first-half possessions to build a 28-7 lead by halftime.

After holding the Tigers on downs, Skripac connected with Ayden Leon for a 55-yard pass before Blake Ewert scored from 20 yards out to open the scoring.

Following a punt, the Raiders needed only two plays to score again as Shane Lindstrom hauled in a short pass along the far sideline and raced 67 yards to the end zone.

The Raiders then made it 21-0 when Tyler Remish scored from five yards out. Hunter Knauf’s 40-yard run was the big play of the drive.

Springfield was able to get on the scoreboard, driving nearly 60 yards as Kaesen Kosek scored on a 4-yard run with 2:49 to play in the first half.

“Springfield is good, and they’re well-coached, said Yeagley. “They have a good offense with some talented skill players across the board. We were a little nervous at first, but we settled in and were able to make some stops.”

Kosek led the Tigers with 34 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Carcelli added 31 yards on 13 attempts.

South Range needed only 65 seconds to beat the clock as Skripac and Lindstrom connected again, from 50 yards out.

Lindstrom caught three passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while Skripac completed 6-of-8 passes for 212 yards with the two scores. All in the first half. He also rushed once for 17 yards.

“We can do that in the passing game with those guys back, said Yeagley. Billy and Shane can make things happen out there. We had a nice trio going on tonight. I’m proud that our guys came together and played as a team. Nobody was selfish, our kids were there for each other, and they’re starting to buy into that team atmosphere.”

The Raiders invoked the mercy clock in the third quarter when Ewert scored from seven yards out, and Luke Starkey added a 42-yard field goal.

Ewert ran for 55 yards on six carries with two touchdowns. Knauf ran five times for 60 yards, while Remish chipped in with 44 yards on seven carries.
