Last night I made my way to St. Clairsville high school for the first time to watch the Thursday night contest between Red Devils and the visiting Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights. The Red Devils entered this one 7-1 losing only to Wheeling Park out of West Virginia, while the Maroon Knights came in 5-2 losing to Shadyside and Bellaire two Ohio schools.
Andrew Vera would make a pick for the Red Devils not even two minutes into the game. Things would only get better from there for the Red Devils or one could say things would only get worse for the Marron Knights from there.
Jacob Jordan one of the fastest backs I have watched this year would bust free for a thirty-nine-yard touchdown with Lucas Otto point after kick we had a 7-0 game, with 8:05 left in the quarter. A twenty-yard catch by Colin Oberdick coupled with another point after kick from Otto and the score all of a sudden was 14-0, with 3:11 left in the quarter.
Wheeling Central’s highlight of the quarter was a ten-yard power run by Lorenzo Ferrera. The defense from the Red Devils would end the quarter with Oberdick stopping Riley Watkins for a short loss. It was apparent as water is wet that Jordan was two or three steps faster than anyone on the Central defense and his night was going to be a big one.
Vera would get his second pick of the night just fifty seconds into the second frame. Michael Toepfer either did not see him or thought he could get the ball by him either way the pick was easy and it took place in the end zone ending the best drive Cental had in the half.
Jordan would gallop sixty-eight-yard to the end zone to make this a 21-0 game, with 10:28 left in the half. The two-play drive totaled eighty yards. Jordan seemed to get stronger and faster with each carry.
The Red Devils defense would get a nice play by Carson Woodford who got to Ferrera for a four-yard loss then it was a sack on Toepfer by Mason mcCort. The Red Devils defense seemed to know what was coming before it came and this would be the case all game long.
Jordan would have a thirty-six-yard run then to close the drive he scored on a six-yard run to make this a 28-0 game. Jordan is going to make some college coach very happy if he chooses to play ball at the next level.
McCort and Brennan Stout would take Watkins down for a short loss but the Maroon Knights were able to overcome the loss when Caleb Ratcliffe caught a twenty-nine-yard pass on a fake punt. The half ended with Toepfer being sacked by J.R.Adams.
After Central fumbled the second-half kickoff the Red Devils quickly made this a 35-0 game, when Oberdick scored his second touchdown pass of the game with an eighteen-yard grab. With the running clock in effect the rest of the game flew by but not before Ratcliffe made a nice catch for a twenty-nine-yards, Watkins picked up thirty yards on a nice run. The last significant play of the game was a fumble recovery from the Red Devils Harrison Kazmirski.
