Cardinal Mooney opened the game with something to prove. A 70 yard kickoff return setup a short field possession that culminated with a 21 yard reception by Carlos Gomez in the endzone on fourth down to take a quick 7-0 lead over the visitors from Steubenville.
After a 29 yard field goal by Steubenville’s Cole Bowers, Cardinal Mooney found the endzone again, on a short Vince Gentile run as the rains started in the second quarter. Their eleven point lead was brief, as Steubenville Big Red found the endzone on a 50 yard pass from Aiden Davis to Ziare Scurry. A two point conversion made it 14-11 with 7:03 left in the half.
In the second half, with the rain intensifying at times, Aiden Davis added to his scoring tally, on the ground, with a one yard run. A few minutes later, Davis found the endzone again, on a short goal line push to give Steubenville a commanding 24-14 lead with 2:08 left in the third.
But, Davis wasn’t done. In the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, he found the endzone for a third time, again from a yard out, to solidify their lead, 31-14 with just 4:54 left.
In the final moments of the game, Cardinal Mooney’s Carlos Gomez finds the endzone one more time, on a 6-yard catch with just 33 ticks left on the clock. After recovering the onside attempt, Steubenville would kneel out the clock as the skies opened once again with a heavy downpour as the teams, and crowds, made their way for the exits. Steubenville moves on with a 3-0 record, hosting Pittsburgh USO next friday night at Harding Stadium in Steubenville. Cardinal Mooney, meanwhile, start out 0-3 on the 2024 campaign and visit the Garaway Pirates in Sugarcreek.
