Valley Christian scored four touchdowns in a span of 5:32 of the first quarter and looked back en route to a 39-0 win over East Palestine Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

“To score 26 points right of the bat for a team that went 2-8 last season, was a relief to be able to sit back and say we’re winning a game like this,” said Valley Christian head coach Jomont Ware.

The Eagles struck quickly on their third snap of football when Battista found Tyrone Lindsey on a 60-yard slant for its first touchdown.

Cameron Daveport broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run on the first play of the Eagles’ next possession. Daveport would lead all rushers with a game-high 93 yards on only two carries.

Things would continue to snowball for the Bulldogs as a Lindey interception set up a short field for Battista’s 9-yard touchdown run.

Sam Washington would recover a fumble in the end zone with eight seconds to play in the first quarter after the Bulldogs had backed up to their 2-yard line thanks to a punt and penalties.

“Even though we were up 26-0, we still need to play our best for the final three quarters. I thought we slipped up a little bit, said Ware.

East Palestine was able to settle down as they surrendered only a single defensive touchdown for the game’s final three quarters.

“Coming off of last season that first quarter was every quarter for us,” said East Palestine head coach Tony Foster. “We’re young in our skill positions, we’ve made some progress, but obviously still have a long way to go.”

The Bulldogs did gain 64 yards of offense in the first half.

“The kids did respond and didn’t let the wheels fall off the wagon,” said Foster. We did some positive things that we need to build on.”

The second half was a different story as the Eagles limited East Palestine to negative 21 yards of offense.

“Our plays were there, it was a matter of execution,” said Foster. “The holes were there. Sometimes we were hitting them too wide, and we still need to clean up our offensive line.”

“We needed our entire defense to play discipline,” said Ware. “With their offense, our defensive line and linebackers needed to scrap around and make plays. They did that. Our secondary came up and made tackles. We were very sound defensively.”

Lindsey started the third quarter with a bang as he took the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

“Tyrone Lindsey is a great athlete, said Ware. He went to states on the track team, and we try to get him the ball when we can.”

Following the mercy clock, the Eagles would close the scoring with Malachi Gibbs’ 2-yard run with 4:11 to play.

“We started, I believe six or eight freshmen last season, said Ware. These guys are sophomores this season, and our upper-class players are showing great leadership,” Ware said.

Valley Christian didn’t move the ball much better in the second half gaining only 43 yards of offense.

“We had a couple of turnovers in the second half, but defense comes out and gets some stops. The guys came out and were flying around and had tons of fun, which football is all about,” said Foster.

Thomas Shasteen led East Palestine with 53 yards on 14 carries.

Both teams will be in action again next week as East Palestine plays host to Columbiana Friday, and Valley Christian is home to Leetonia next Saturday night.
