Thursday night I made my first trip to Waynesville to watch the Spartans battle the Lumberjacks from Dayton Oakwood. The Spartans since losing to 5-0 Clinton Massie in week one have run off three straight wins entering this contest. Oakwood came into this game with a 2-2 record.

Waynesville needed just three plays to light up the scoreboard with Alex Amburgy finding Connor Berrey for the 78-yard score. Berrey also added the point after kick making this a 7-0 game, with 11:10 left in the opening quarter. The Spartans were right back at it with 6:37 left in the quarter where Amburgy found Garrett Lundy for a 30-yard completion and then topping the drive off was Lundy with a 3-yard run making this a 14-0 game after the point-after kick was again good. The Spartans would get a 42-yard catch by Trent Davis that aided in the next score that came on a Lundy 4-yard score. Lundy converted the two-point play with a run making this a 22-0 game, with 0:43 seconds left on the first quarter clock.

Stephen Lauterbach scrambled for a 41-yard run to wake up their fans but a sack by Lincoln Buck on Lauterback and then a pick by Connor Huffman in the endzone killed the drive. Huffman took the ball all the way back to the 43-yard line. Berrey hauled in a 26-yard pass helping to set up a 26-yard touchdown run from Amburgy making this a 28-0 game, with 7:33 left in the half.

Oakwood was able to get on the scoreboard after completing a 5-play, 64-yard drive with the scoring play coming on a 13-yard catch by Jackson Thobe. Luke Ruetschle connected on the point after kick making this a 28-7 game with 5:39 left on the clock.

Ludy returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards to the Oakwood 28-yard line. The drive yielded zero points as the Lumberjacks defense ended things a short time later. Lauterback would be sacked by Jon Brillhart for a loss of seven. Then he would be picked off by Carter Barnthouse, with a little less than a minute left on the clock. Amburgy was sacked by Nathan Wertz but Amburgy overcame the sack by finding Berrey for a 40-yard catch to make this a 35-7 game.

Braden Devine would pick up 37 yards on a nice run to get things going for Oakwood in the third quarter. Lauterbach found Thobe for a 4-yard touchdown to close the gap to 35-14. A roughing-the-punter call on Oakwood led to a 30-yard field goal by Berrey to make this a 38-14 game.

In the final frame, Lundy scored on a 2-yard run making this a 45-14 game. Lundy would end his PAFOOTBALLNEWS player of the game with a pick. The Waynesville defenses ended the big plays with another pick this one by Berrey, who also had a big night.
