2024 District 9 Review – 3rd Week Action and QB Focus

Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits:

Quarterbacks:

There happens to be 6 quarterbacks in District 9 that may play at the next level if they so choose.  Some of them play baseball too and are very good at that also.  Jase Ferguson (Central Clarion), Shane Magee (Otto-Eldred), Aiden Patton (Brockway), Talan Reese (Bradford), Braylon Wagner (Redbank Valley), and Trey Wingard (DuBois) all have the credentials to play in college.  These 6 QBs are tough to deal with when passing the football.  Most are tough to deal with even running the ball.

These six guys through only 3 games have thrown for a combined 4,619 yards and 56 touchdowns.  That’s an average per quarterback of 257 yards passing and 3 TDs a game.  They also average almost a touchdown a game rushing.  Keep an eye on these quality young men.  To our knowledge all of them are leaders, they are respectful, and they are passionate.  We’ve had the privilege to speak with 5 of them and they were nothing but well-spoken and polite.

Jase Ferguson #1.

  • Jase Ferguson, Central Clarion, accounted for 3 scores. (2 passing, 1 rushing)
  • Braylon Wagner, Redbank Valley, pitched the ole pigskin for 4 TDs this week and a career high of 419 yards. He also ran for a 5th score.
  • Trey Wingard, DuBois, tossed the agate for 266 yards and 5 TDs.
  • Shane Magee, Otto-Eldred, threw for 3 scores for the 3rdd week in a row. He actually had 4 TD passes this week and collected 381 yards.
  • Aiden Patton, Brockway, tossed 3 touchdown passes while throwing for 284 yards.

Receivers:

  • Rylan Rupp, Redbank Valley, caught 9 passes for 164 yards and a pair of scores.
  • Manning Splain, Otto-Eldred, had 107 yards in receptions.
  • Blake Pisarcik, Brockway, caught 2 touchdown passes and was responsible for 102 receiving yards.
  • Mason Burford, Central Clarion, had 104 yards receiving and scored twice.

Running Backs:

  • Brady Collins, Clearfield, rushed for over 200 yards for the third consecutive week. He had 208 yards and garnered 4 TDs.
  • Aiden Bliss, Port Allegheny, ran for 276 yards and 4 TDs. NOTE: After seeing him play, I wouldn’t want to try and tackle him.
  • Malakai Zucal, Cameron County, had 271 yards rushing and scored 3 times.
  • Beau Thomas, Punxsy, scored 4 touchdowns, 3 rushing and 1 on a pass reception.
  • Tristan Kiser, Port Allegany, rushed for 174 yards and 3 TDs. (See defense and special teams for more on Tristan.)

Defense and Special Teams:

  • Tristan Kiser, Port Allegany, returned a kickoff 89 yards for a TD.
  • Tristan Kiser, Port Allegany, turned around a few minutes later and had a 95-yard pick six.
  • Max Gallagher, Union-AC Valley, had 12 tackles.
  • Punxsy’s ‘D’ held Moniteau to under 70 total yards and only 9 yards rushing in the Chucks’ shutout of the Warriors.

Game of the Week:

Port Allegany imposed their will on Redbank Valley in the match anticipated matchup between the two 2024 state-ranked Class A teams who have been the top two football teams the past four years in District 9.  The Gator running game could not be stopped.  Aiden Bliss and Tristan Kiser were practically unstoppable, at least in this game.  On the other side, QB Braylon Wagner and WR Rylan Rupp did their best to keep Redbank in the game, but Port’s defensive line put a lot of pressure on Wagner throughout the game forcing a couple of interceptions.  In the end, Port Allegany slowly pulled away and the Mercy Rule was eventually invoked.  Final score was 66-38.  It still was a fun game to watch and there is a high probability these two teams will meet again in the district playoffs.

Other Notes:

  • Only 4 teams remain unbeaten after three weeks of play. They are Central Clarion, Clearfield, Karns City, and Port Allegany.
  • Matt Bodamer of Kane collected the first win of his coaching career when the Wolves beat Otto-Eldred. Here’s to many more Coach Bodamer!  By the way, that win broke Kane’s 12-game losing streak.

Upcoming Games of the Week:

  • DuBois (2-1) @ Karns City (2-0)
  • Port Allegany (3-0) @ Brockway (2-1)
