Oil City 47, Punxsutawney 14

A season ago, District 10 went 0-6 in the state tournament. Including 0-4 against District 9, Oil City, and Farrell proved that 2025 will be a different story. While the Steelers’ 48-20 rout of the Gremlins was somewhat expected, nobody thought Oil City would do the same to a previously 10-1 Chucks squad.

For contrast, Puxsutawney had two victories over Dubois, 49-35 and 17-14. Why does that matter? Well, the Oilers’ only loss this season came against General McLane, 28-7, and they atoned for that defeat by upsetting the Lancers 16-14 in the District 10 title game.

Still, when Dubois dispatched General McLane by 21 points earlier in the season, not many thought the Oilers would beat Punxsutawney. So instead, they just blew them out.

Tailback Steven Heise rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the first half, helping the Oilers jump out to a 21-0 first-half lead.

Heise scored on runs of 3, 29, and 4 yards. Punxsutawney scored on the final play of the first half on Logan Moore’s 13-yard reception from Maddox Hetrick.

Oil City extended its 21-6 halftime lead by putting the game away in the third quarter when Heise added a 1-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the evening, and quarterback Cole Findlay’s 11-yard run gave the Oilers a 34-6 lead after three quarters.

Jordan Rutan scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter for Punxsutawney. Still, Findlay added a 12-yard scoring run and a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown to put an exclamation point on the victory.

Steven Heise rushed for 124 yards on 23 carries, while Findlay completed 10 of 15 passes for 127 yards, adding 78 rushing. Both grabbed two interceptions on defense for good measure.

Oil City will now face its most formidable opponent of the season in WPIAL champion Aliquippa. The Quips knocked off McKeesport 21-12 in the District 7 final.

Kickoff is slated for 7 pm at Slippery Rock University on Friday night.
