Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits (SEE ARTICLE TOMORROW FOR D-9 PLAYOFF PREVIEW WEEK 2):

Quarterbacks:

  • Braylon Wagner, Redbank Valley, had 325 total yards, 180 passing and 145 running.  He threw 3 TD passes and scored once rushing.
  • Trey Wingard, DuBois, heaved the rock for 279 yards and 5 touchdowns.
  • Dom Corcetti, Keystone, ran for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus he tossed a touchdown through the air.
  • Aiden Patton, Brockway, had 210 total yards and led the team in rushing.

 Running Backs:

  • Andrew Field, St. Marys, powered his way for 121 yards and a pair of scores.
  • Ethan Rex, Central Clarion, scored 4 times in gaining 130 yards.
  • Colton Ryan, Clearfield, gained 166 yards and scored 2 TDs.
  • Logan Skibinski, Union/AC Valley, rushed 2 touchdowns and caught a pass for a third TD.
  • Max Gallagher, Union/AC Valley, racked up 130 yards and a trio of scores,
  • London Duncan, DuBois, cruised for 105 yards.
  • Jim Rankin, Keystone, scored two touchdowns.

 Receivers:

  • Jaxon Huffman, Redbank Valley, hauled down 8 aerials and scored 2 touchdowns, 1 receiving and 1 running.
  • Jaxson Hanzely, DuBois, had 7 grabs for 117 yards.

 Defense and Special Teams:

  • Jace Zimmerman, Ridgway, returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD.
  • Jaxson Hanzely, DuBois, returned an interception about 105 yards, but according to the high school rulebook only gets credit for 100.
  • Kamden Fragale, Cameron County, had an 81-yard pick six.
  • Jackson Mravintz, Central Clarion, scored on a 25-yard interception.
  • Easton Magagnotti, Redbank Valley, traversed the field 90 yards with a fumble for the score.
  • Landon Mohney, Keystone, scored on an 80-yard fumble return.
  • Matthew Winnings, Brockway, took the ball away from the toter and raced 37 yards to pay dirt.
  • Patrick Durash, Central Clarion, recovered a fumble in the end zone.
  • Colbin Elliot, Union/AC Valley, took down 10 opposing ball carriers.
  • Aidan Fox, Union/AC Valley, had 8 tackles.
  • The Central Clarion defense held Perry Traditional to a minus 60 yards in the first half of their game.  (I never saw or heard of something like that before.)

Other Tidbits:

  • Port Allegany’s all-state running back, Aiden Bliss, sits at 7,003 career rushing yards according to MaxPreps and trails D-9’s leader, Nick Stewart of Curwensville, by 321 yards.
  • Bliss has 108 career rushing touchdowns and 120 overall.
  • DuBois’s Trey Wingard broke the school career completion record of 518.  He currently has 523.  He also topped the single season touchdown pass record of 41.  He has 42 after his 5 TD tosses last Friday.  Trey owns the career passing touchdown record with 94 at this point.  He needs 424 more yards to break the career passing yardage record.
  • Union/AC Valley is now 10-1 with their only loss to state ranked Port Allegany.  It looks like this was the Falcon Knights’ best record ever since the football co-op of the two schools in 2016.
  • Central Clarion chalked up 3 safeties in their game which may be or may have tied a state record.  The national record is 4 by Fort Washington, Maryland.

Games of the Week:

  • Brockway defeated Saint Marys 31-26 to win their second straight Class 3A crown.  But it was not easy.  The Rovers were behind early 6-0 and at halftime 20-15 thanks to the Dutchmen scoring on a 32-yard pass with 2 seconds left.  Brockway tallied the first three scores in the second half via the defensive play of the game, a field goal, and the offensive play of the game.  They stole the ball and ran 37 yards with the ‘fumble’ to score early in the third (defensive play of game).  Then in the 4th quarter the Rovers connected on a 74-yard touchdown pass to put them up 31-20 (offensive play of game).  But St. Marys scored with under six minutes left and recovered the subsequent pooch kickoff.  That is when the Rover ‘D’ stood tall and sacked the Dutchmen QB on 4th and goal.  A couple minutes later St. Marys was threatening again, but the Brockway defense came up with the interception to seal the deal.

Upcoming Playoff Game of the Week:

  • Clearfield 8-3 @ Punxsutawney 9-1 @Brockway H.S.
