Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits including state leaders:
Quarterbacks:
- Dom Corcetti, Keystone, accounted for 5 touchdowns, 3 via the air and 2 more with his legs.
- Cole Johnston, Karns City, ran for 2 scores and passed for another.
- Trey Wingard, DuBois, had 4 TD tosses.
- Ryan Schenfield, Otto-Eldred, apparently filled in for Shane Magee in the 2nd half and threw a pair of TD passes plus ran for a touchdown.
- Eric Novosel, Kane, 2 TD passes and a touchdown rushing. He had a 4th that was a defensive score – see below.
- Xavier Curry, Clearfield, accumulated 221 all-purpose yards and a couple of TD passes.
Running Backs:
- Aiden Bliss, Port Allegany, rushed for 197 yards and 4 touchdowns plus he added another TD by catching a pass.
- Colton Ryan, Clearfield, 168 yards running the ball and another 83 yards catching passes. He scored 4 touchdowns, 2 each rushing and receiving.
- London Duncan, DuBois, galloped for 168 yards and a pair of scores.
- Jonah Ganoe, Smethport, had 3 rushing scores.
- Evan Anderson, Kane, his trio of touchdowns were made up of 2 on the ground and 1 on an aerial reception.
- Tommy Langdon, Bradford, scored 2 touchdowns running and another on defense (see below).
Receivers:
- Jaxson Hanzely, DuBois, grabbed 3 TD aerials.
Defense and Special Teams:
- Reed Hawkins, Curwensville, returned a kickoff 75 yards.
- Mason Burford, Central Clarion, scored when he travelled down the field 55 yards with a punt.
- Teeg Hetrick, Punxsy, grabbed a poor punt and returned it 28 yards for the score.
- Parker Kalgren, Brookville, returned a punt for a TD. Yardage unknown.
- Hayden Freeman, Brookville, returned an interception to the house 88 yards.
- Tommy Langdon, Bradford, had an 80-yard pick six.
- Eric Novosel, Kane, returned his pick six 30 yards.
- Zach Phillips, Brookville, 78-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
- Brant Parker, Central Clarion, recovered a fumble in the end zone.
- Eli Nellis, Keystone, picked off two opponent passes.
- Max Gallagher, Union/AC Valley, brought down 14 opposing ball carriers.
- Wyatt Hungiville, Smethport, tackled 12 people.
- Micah Kindel, Union/AC Valley, had 11 tackles.
Other Tidbits:
- Union/A-C Valley is now 5-0 and that is the first time in Falcon Knight history of 10 years they have started a year 5-0.
- Until this week, the top 3 career rushing leaders in D-9 history were all from Curwensville. They are Nick Stewart (7,324 yards), Nick Sipes (5,963 yards), and Alex Holland (5,754). Port’s Aiden Bliss is now third with 5,948 yards. He should pass Sipes this week and has a more than reasonable chance to surpass Stewart and become the leading D-9 rusher of all-time if he stays healthy.
- The DuBois Beavers have three players who lead the state in their particular stat group according to MaxPreps. They are QB Trey Wingard, WR Jaxson Hanzely, and K Maddox Barnes. Wingard has thrown for 1,420 yards and 24 touchdowns, both of which lead PA according to MaxPreps. Hanzely has latched onto 13 passes for touchdowns, plus he has 790 receiving yards. He leads the state in both of those categories. Maddox Barnes is a perfect 35 of 35 in the PAT department. He also leads PA in total points with 38.
- Other top ten D-9 players include QB Braylon Wagner of Redbank (7th in yardage) and WR teammate, Jaxon Huffman, who is 4th in receiving yards. Aiden Bliss of Port Allegany is 5th in rushing yards with 896 and tied for first in total touchdowns with 16.
Game of the Week: One more time we’ll go with two contests. The first one found Punxsy coming back in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive week to stay undefeated by beating Karns City 22-19. The Gremlins led 19-0 at half time and the game looked to be in the bag, but Coach Snyder has given his players a lot of confidence this year. The Chucks scored 8 points in the third and trailed 19-8 heading into the fourth quarter. A short punt return for a touchdown cut KC’s lead to 19-14. Then with less than 6 minutes left and Karns City about to get the ball back on a punt, the Gremlins roughed the kicker to allow Punxsy to keep the ball. Consequently, Punxsy drove down the field and scored the go ahead and winning points with 38 seconds left. Kudos to the Chuck defense for shutting out KC in the second half.
Clearfield was involved in the other game of the week. The Bison were involved in a back and forth affair with Huntingdon. The H-men led 14-13 at the half, but Clearfield scored twice in the third quarter to surge ahead 27-14 heading to the fourth. But Huntingdon soon cut the lead to 27-21. Clearfield responded by driving to the Bearcat 1-yard line and nixing an easy field goal, presumably, the Bison elected to go for it and failed. Huntingdon then made them pay by driving 99 yards and scoring the tying TD and winning PAT with 4 seconds left.
Upcoming Game of the Week:
- DuBois 4-1 @ Punxsutawney 5-0
- Central Clarion 2-3 @ Karns City 3-2
