A huge ranked matchup between Richland and Bishop McCort-Carroll will take place on Thursday night at Point stadium. The two heavyweights in the west side of the LHAC are facing off on 9/11 as a very special event on a very significant day. While the rivalry is extremely meaningful to these two programs, so is playing on a day like 9/11.

“It’s extremely meaningful for our program,” Richland Head Coach Brandon Bailey explained. “Playing on 9/11 always carries a deeper sense of respect and perspective—we know football is important, but we’re also reminded of the sacrifices made and the unity that day represents. To be the only game in the area, under the lights, against our biggest rival, makes it even more special. Our players understand the responsibility that comes with that stage, and we want to honor both the rivalry and the significance of the date by playing with class, toughness, and pride.”

“It’s very meaningful in both aspects,” Bishop McCort-Carroll Head Coach Tom Smith stated. “Our school has a close rivalry with the Richland School District. We’ve been playing against each other for many years and I even used to coach there. Our schools have some history together and I have a lot of respect for their school. The fact that we are playing on 9/11 is absolutely fantastic. We get to honor our American heroes by playing the great game of football and to celebrate what our first responders and military  folks do for us. Without them we couldn’t do what we do. I think its pretty fantastic to be able to celebrate them on this day with this rivalry.”

A meaningful game on a meaningful game is absolutely incredible and it is so great that these two schools came together to alter the schedule to do so. The game itself is going to be a great one too. Richland has done their job against a solid ranked Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop McCort has dominated all of their opponents.

Richland in particular has shined in every aspect of the game. Quarterback Jacob Regan has done great finding D1 prospect Arnold Mugerwa and Jamere Christian in the pass game. He has accounted for 638 passing yards, while Christian has gained 279 and Mugerwa with 244. Not only that, their run game between Joe McAneny and Grayson Mahla has been tough to stop. McAneny has tallied 176 yards and Mahla with 123. They are going to be very tough to stop and McCort knows that.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” Coach Smith commented. “We are 3-0 and we want to understand while we’ve gotten off to a great start, there is still a lot of football to be played. We are playing a team that has played in the district title game in the last three years. We just want to be careful and not get ahead of ourselves. This is a great football program and we are excited to get a shot at what I think is one of the best teams in the state, certainly the best team in the conference. We want to be mentioned in that category and to do that we’ve gotta beat them”

McCort’s offense themselves has been pretty dominant too. Jon Delia and Bentley Bainey have been strong runners while Nick Dressick, Kaleem Taylor, and Angelo Gallucci have been tough in the receiving game. Not only that, but they have so many experienced lineman up front as well.

“McCort’s offense is very balanced and experienced, so our defense has to be disciplined on every snap,” Coach Bailed said. “It starts up front—winning battles at the line of scrimmage, controlling gaps, and tackling well in space. We also have to limit the big plays from their skill guys and make them earn everything. If we play with great communication, effort, and physicality, we’ll give ourselves a chance to slow down a really talented group. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Both teams are 3-0 and among the top of the district 6 2A standings. This game could very well be the game of the year in district 6 and it being the only game in the area on 9/11 is awesome. Point Stadium at 7 PM. Fans do not want to miss this game between #5 Richland and #7 Bishop McCort-Carroll.
