The #7 Bishop McCort-Carroll Crushers rode a strong first half to upset the #5 Richland Rams 31-12 in a memorable game on 9/11.

Bishop McCort-Carroll absolutely dominated the first half, outscoring Richland 21-6. They forced turnovers and rode off of Jon Delia and Bentley Bainey the entire game.

Richland got a stop to open up the game and Grayson Mahla took them to the red zone with a 52 yard rush. A few players later, Bentley Bainey intercepted the Rams attempt for a touchdown and gave the Crushers the ball back.

McCort drove down the field the next drive and Bainey found Delia for a seven yard touchdown.

The Crushers forced a quick punt, drove down the field and things got real interesting. Richland forced a field goal attempt and McCort faked it, but a face mask penalty gave them another chance. The very next play, Bainey hit Kaleem Taylor for a five yard touchdown.

Richland started to drive, but Nick Dressick recovered a fumble and McCort instantly scored on a 77 yard touchdown from Delia.

The Rams would finally put together a full drive that ended on a Jacob Regan pass to Brayden Knepper, scoring from 22 yards out. McCort blocked the PAT, making it a 21-6 ballgame heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, McCort immediately picked up a fumble and scored on a 24 yard field goal from Avery Connor.

They’d go back and forth until Delia broke away for another touchdown, this time from 34 yards out to cap off a ridiculous evening. He finished with 257 total yards and three touchdowns. That is not forgetting the force he was on defense too.

“JD wanted redemption from his game last year,” Bishop McCort-Carroll Head Coach Smith stated. “I knew he wasn’t gonna let us or his teammates down. We could have fed him the ball 40 times tonight because he wanted it. He wanted the work and he played like a beast tonight.”

Richland would add another score on a pass from Regan to Alex Bond from 43 yards out, but a failed two point attempt ended their night of scoring. They had another chance late in the game, but Bainey picked off the Rams again. Both teams would exchange blows just running the clock away.

“Credit to those guys, they forced us into some mistakes,” Richland Head Coach Brandon Bailey explained. “We didn’t play the clean game we needed to win. We’ll go back to the drawing board. We’ve got a resilient group of kids and we’ve got a tough Forest Hills game next Friday, so we don’t have any time to feel bad for ourselves.”

Bishop McCort-Carroll will take on Somerset next week and Richland will face off against Forest Hills.
