Bishop McCort-Carroll rides impressive game from Bentley Bainey and defense to take down Bellwood-Antis in a thrilling 21-6 victory at John R. Hayes Field.
Defense was the narrative of this thrilling game. There were two blocked field goals, two interceptions, and plenty of fourth down stops.
The first half was back and forth, including six drives for each team. A scoreless first quarter was headlined by the Bellwood defense, who stopped them in their own territory to begin the game.
Brady Page would follow that with a forced fumble, giving the Crushers the ball in the red zone. The Blue Devils held strong though, stopping them at the six yard line.
Bishop McCort would force a three and out and get the ball back, but then Alex McCartney picked off Bentley Bainey and had a strong return to mid field.
Bellwood pounded the rock the following drive and it was capped off by a 10 yard touchdown from McCartney. The Crushers would then stop the two point attempt.
The Crushers responded with a stop of their own and then Bainey led the charge. He took the snap and ran for it, carrying about four defenders forward and breaking the tackle for a 27 yard gain. A few plays later he would run it in from a yard out to give Bishop McCort a one point lead.
McCort got another stop and put together another strong drive by Bainey, accounting for 34 passing yards and 11 rushing. Jon Delia would punch it in from three yards out to give them a 14-6 lead into halftime.
Bellwood drove down the field with less than a minute, but the Crushers blocked their field goal that sent the game to halftime.
Right after the half, McCort drove down the field after a bomb from Bailey to Nick Dressick, but Bellwood blocked a field goal of their own and returned it to midfield.
They ran it at the Crushers nine plays in a row, but the McCort defense held strong for a fourth down stop in the red zone.
Another three and out by Bellwood led to Bainey getting an interception of his own and he made a great return after that.
“On that interception we had a few things,” Bainey explained. “We have been training and we knew their plays. We were confident in all our coverages and I knew the one time they tested me I had to step up and make the play for my team.”
Following that, Bainey would lead them down the field and score his second rushing touchdown of the night from seven yards out.
“He (Bainey) had an amazing game,” Bishop McCort Head Coach Smith described. “Running the ball, throwing the ball, interceptions and playing on defense. This is what he can do for you when he’s healthy.”
Bainey finished the night with 102 passing yards, 59 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns.
Bellwood kept pushing the ball down field, but just could not punch it in the end zone and after another turnover on downs, the Crushers were able to kneel it and walk away 2-0.
“Was an unbelievable football game on both sides,” Coach Smith stated. “Kids plays hard and I wanna congratulate them on a hard fought game. I am also extremely proud of the way our kids played tonight in all three phases of the game.”
Bellwood fought very hard and were in it until the very end. They battled in every phase that they could, but Bishop McCort was just too much to handle.
“We knew that they were going to be a good team,” Bellwood Head Coach Nick Lovrich commented. “They’re well coached and they played really well tonight. Their line is good, they have some talented skilled guys. All around a very strong football team.”
Bishop McCort will travel to Chestnut Ridge next week. Bellwood-Antis heads to Huntington.
