Aliquippa scores a touchdown in Thursday’s PIAA 4A State Championship victory over Bishop McDevitt.

The Aliquippa Quips finish the 2021 season with a 34-27 victory over the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders at Hershey Park stadium Thursday night in a game dominated by Freshman running back Tiqwai Hayes. Hayes finished the contest with 139 yards on 32 attempts with three touchdowns.

The game wasn’t easy for the Quips. The Crusaders came out of the gates with two touchdowns to take an early 13-0 lead. Mario Easterly scored on a 59-yard pass and Marquese Williams scored from 16 yards out. The Quips quickly bounced back with two scores of their own. Hayes would get a huge 42-yard touchdown and on the following drive, Cameron Lindsey intercepted Stone Saunders and returned it 29 yards for the touchdown.

The Crusaders quickly responded with a huge 55-yard touchdown strike from Saunders to Kamil Foster. However, on the next possession, John Tracy powered his way in from two yards out for the touchdown. After a failed extra point the game was tied 20-20 going into halftime.

“The kids said let’s run the ball, so that’s what we did.” Said, coach Warfield. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Hayes drove his way into the endzone from one yard out on fourth and goal to take the 27-20 lead. On the next drive, Hayes would score again from eight yards out that would give the Quips a 34-20 lead and a touchdown that ultimately would put the game away.

The 2021 Aliquippa Quips are the 2021 PIAA 4A Champions and it wasn’t an easy path. They had to take down McKeesport in double overtime then take down Belle Vernon in the WPIAL finals and a tough Jersey Shore team to make it to Hershey. “I’m so proud of these kids, the ups and downs with injuries and for these kids to go down 13-0 again and come back and fight is just the essence of teamwork.” Said, coach Warfield.

“It feels great, plus being on the sweetest place on earth, dealing with adversity and it feels so good and to have a State Championship under my belt it just feels good.” Said Hayes.
