Vikings Get Much Needed Win On Homecoming Night

Allentown- Rain pelted down much of the night on Saturday at J.Birney Crum Stadium, but as the rain ceased at games end, so did the two game losing streak of the Central Catholic Vikings to the tune of a 21-7 win over the Zephyrs of Whitehall in a key Eastern Penn Conference South contest.

Running back Caiden Shaffer scored twice and the defense came up with some huge stops in the final quarter to thwart any thoughts of a Zephyr comeback.

Shaffer capped off an impressive 93 yard drive with 1:04 left in the opening quarter with a one yard run and 7-0 lead.

With losses to Bethlehem Freedom 42-7 and being shutout last week 18-0 to Nazareth, coach Tim McGorry’s team got back at it this week in practice to get that edge back that gave the team to crucial wins over Emmaus(21-0) and a 14-7 win over Parkland, both at the friendly confines of JBC.

Quarterback Tamlin Ferguson lofted a perfect pass to his receiver Jareel Calhoun for a 27 yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 1:24 left in the half capping off a 48 yard drive.

On their ensuing drive Whitehall on the second play from their own 22, Damonte Foreman found an opening on the left side and raced down the sidelines for a 78 yard jaunt to cut the lead to 14-7 as the game went to half.

Central Catholic had the chance to add to the lead, but both drives ended with Whitehall interceptions in the end zone the second by Tommy Buskirk.

Shaffer put the game away with 2:47 left in the game as he broke a would-be tackle at the line of scrimmage and bolted into the end zone from 38 yards out making it 21-7.

Whitehall would drive deep into Vikings territory on their next posession but a 4th down conversion came up short preserving the Vikings win.

Central Catholic improves to 5-3 and will be on the road Friday night to face 1-5 Pocono Mountain East, before coming back home the following week for the “Holy War” with Bethlehem Catholic to close out the regular season. Pocono Mountain East is coming off 56-16 loss to undefeated Northampton and have lost three in a row. Whitehall(3-4) lost their third game in a row as well, will be at Nazareth(5-3) Friday. The Blue Eagles were blitzed by Emmaus 35-7. Whitehall closes out their season at home with Northampton in two weeks.

Here are Coach McGorry’s thoughts after the win Saturday.
