Vikings Overwhelm Cardinals on Senior Night Sets Up Huge Game with Bethlehem Catholic in the “Holy War.”

ALLENTOWN- Thursday night’s contest between Pocono Mountain East at Allentown Central Catholic was originally scheduled for Saturday night because the Vikings rent J. Birney Crum Stadium from the Allentown School District and William Allen and Louis Dieruff get first choice what night they want to play. That leaves Central Catholic to play on Saturdays, and with a showdown with Bethlehem Catholic looming next Friday Central Catholic had the game moved so that more focus could be used on the “Holy War”, the decision paid off as the Vikings snapped a two game skid with a 35-0 shutout over the Cardinals before a moderated Senior Night Crowd.

Pocono Mountain East took the opening kickoff and using a steady diet of the triple option, they picked up a couple of first downs but could not sustain a drive and were first to punt. The Vikings took over deep in their own side of the field, but using a strong running attack led by Caiden Shaffer and a couple of short passes by Tamlin Ferguson, Centarl catholic moved inside the Cardinals 20 where Shaffer capped off the drive with a seventeen yard run with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead after Ferguson tacked on the PAT.

PME tried using up most of the play clock on each of their offensive plays as they would snap the ball with a second left, problem was that had could not move the ball with any efficiency the entire night.

The next time Central catholic had the ball Ferguson connected with Jareel Calhoun from seven yards out on a fourth-and-goal, after a bad snap pushed the ball from inside the one back on third down, that made the score 14-0 with 7:48 left till half.

After another Cardinal punt set the Vikings up near midfield, they scored again this time on a 22 yard pass from Ferguson to Calhoun in the back corner of the end zone with 4:49 still left in the second quarter and a 21-0 lead.

The Vikings would score once more for their fourth consecutive touchdown as Ferguson found Armonie Torres behind the defense on a deep post pattern from 38 yards out and 27-0 after the PAT slammed off the right upright with 2:35 remaining. The Cardinals were willing to just run out the clock to close the half trailing by that score as the teams headed for the locker room.

Central Catholic would receive the second half kickoff and returned it to the Cardinals 44. Sophmore quarterback Kyle Fleshman came in to relieve Ferguson, three straight completions put the ball at the thirteen, where Fleshman lofted a pass to Calhoun for the score and the two-point conversion was good and put the game in mercy-rule at 35-0 with 10:18 left.

Neither team really threatened again as both teams used a variety of players the remainder of the game.

Central Catholic moves to 5-4 with the “Holy War: with Becahi(4-4) at Bethlehem School District Stadium next Friday. The Golden Hawks face cross-town rival Freedom Friday. Pocono Mountain East go to 1-8 and will have Pocono Mountain west next week to close out the season at home.

Here is what quarterback Tamlin Ferguson had to say about tonight’s game and discusses the game with the Golden Hawks.
