Central Catholic Subdues Red Rovers Saturday Night
By Brian Ptashinski @BPtashinski on Twitter

ALLENTOWN- The Easton Red Rovers came into their contest Saturday night at historic J. Birney Crum Stadium trying to avoid starting the season 0-3 and virtually taking them out of the race for an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South championship, as their opponents the Vikings of Allentown Central Catholic were not obliging hosts as the Vikings subdued the Rovers 27-7 before a boisterous crowd. The last time Easton began the season with that record was back in 1981.

The Vikings scored on the opening drive, using the no-huddle offense to perfection, they kept Easton on their heels as running back Caiden Shaffer pounded the ball in the end zone from two yards out after an 8 play 78 yard drive taking an 7-0 lead with just 2:50 taking off the clock and a 7-0 lead.

Central Catholic would score again with 2:02 remaining in the opening quarter on a perfectly setup screen pass from Matt Keyes to Nathan Schultz that covered eighteen yards and a 14-0 lead. Keyes was nearly perfect all night completing 10-of 11 passes for 97 yards and the one score and zero interceptions.

The lead increased to 21-0 with 4:37 left before halftime, as Easton was set up to punt near their own end zone end up going over the punters head and Griffen Patridge was johnny-on-the-spot falling on the ball.

Joseph Martinez took over signal calling duties for Easton and had a respectable night throwing 21 passes completing 12 for 89 yards one touchdown and one interception. Martinez connected with Jasir Futchey for an eight yard score with 1:38 before half. Martinez rolled to his right and threw back left with Futchey all alone for the score. Austin Martellucci made the PAT and the score was 21-7 as teh game went to intermission.

Red zone issues plagued Easton all night, as they drove to Vikings six, nine and eighteen yard lines but failed to muster a score. A crucial interception by Central Catholic’s Travis Foster, a turnover on downs and a missed 43 yard field goal were the results of their efforts.

The Vikings were continued to pound the ball eating up first downs and time off the clock as the home team finished with 180 yards on the ground between Caiden Shaffer and Nathan Schultz. Shaffer would close the book on the scoring as he got into the end zone from 2 yards out with just 2:40 left in the game. The PAT was wide left however.

With the win, Central Catholic keeps pace in the conference at 2-1, coming off a 12-7 loss to Emmaus last week. The Vikings have another powerhouse in Parkland (2-1) on the road Friday night coming off a 21-13 win over Freedom. Easton will try to avoid going 0-4 with a home date against Whitehall(1-2) the Zephyrs coming off a 27-19 loss to undefeated Emmaus.

Here is what coach Tim McGorry stated after his teams effort and what to expect against the Trojans coming up.
