OREFIELD- The saying goes–Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. On Friday night, the Allentown Central Catholic Vikings were fortunate enough to survive a late Parkland Trojans rally that had pushed the Viking defense to the brink in a 21-14 win in a crucial Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Contest.

The Trojans playing without their starting quarterback Luke Spang, who was out with an injury, had Nakhi Bullock calling signals completed 6 of 14 passes for 101 yards 0 touchdowns but had 3 interceptions on the night also rushed for an additional 58 yards and one score. Bullock led his team down field on their opening drive that covered 74 yards capped by a Marquez Wimberly score from 12 yards and a 7-0 lead with Gryffin Mitstifer PAT.

Running Back Caiden Shaffer would find the end zone twice for Central Catholic as he carried the ball 24 times for 130 yards and those two scores. At the 7:08 mark he cashed in from a yard out to tie the score at seven on a nine play sixty yard drive.

After forcing a Parkland turnover at the Parkland 20, the Viking offense went to work with Shaffer converting a two yard score with 2:52 left before intermission. On a drive that took just seven plays. That made the score 14-7 as teams headed for the locker rooms.

Nasir McLean, returned a Parkland punt 40 yards to set up the Viking offense at the Trojan 32. Running back Nathan Schultz found the end zone from eleven yards out with 6:35 left in the third quarter extending the Viking lead to 21-7.

Parkland’s Trey Tremba, who was also playing hurt, then took a Viking punt near midfield and weaved his way to the Central Catholic 19 midway through the final quarter. That drive ended up with Bullock rushing around the right end for a ten yard score making it 21-14 with 5:52 left in the contest.

Playing inspired, the Parkland defense stepped up and forced a Viking punt. On the Trojans last-gasp drive, they faced a 4th and 19 after a crucial sack of Bullock, but he was able to rebound and connected with Trey Tremba, who made a juggling catch and a 25 yard game to keep the drive alive.

Moving the ball to the Viking one, Bullock took the snap and made his way towards the goal line, but the ball was stripped and McClean came up with the loose ball in the end zone with 2:12 left sealing the victory for Central Catholic.

Central Catholic(3-1) will be back at J. Birney Crum Stadium to face Bethlehem Freedom(1-2) Freedom hosts Nazareth Saturday night. Parkland (2-2) will be on the road against nearby rival Whitehall Zephyrs(2-2) who defeated Easton Friday 37-14.

After the game, Central Catholic coach Tim McGorry had this to say about his teams win.
