Anthony’s Philadelphia Public/Catholic League School History Project: Day 1 Germantown High (Closed)

| April 24, 2026

With the football season just under 4 months away I’ve started a summer project for the Philly Public, Catholic & Inter-Ac schools compiling a list of all-time greats at each school along with coaches and cool facts. Quite a few programs are now shut down as the schools were forced to close by the School District and Archdiosese so we will honor and pay homage to those programs as well. To kick the list off we start with a historical neighborhood school that shut its doors in June 2013 Germantown High. Home of the Bears, G-Town won 5 public league titles and sent a handful of guys to the NFL.

Thoughts: Germantown High situated in the Germantown section of Philadelphia played in the B Division which was later renamed the Central Division of the Public League for many years. Most seasons their divisional opponents were Central, Roxborough, Dobbins and Gratz. The Bears won 5 public league titles (1923-1926, 1982 & 1999).

The 1925 team defeated Frankford 10-6 in what was the first postseason game in Public League history which was held at historic Franklin Field in front of 20,000 fans. Germantown with under 3 minutes remaining ran in the game winning touchdown.

The 1926 championship was a nailbiter with Germantown scoring with just 3 minutes left in regulation in what was a scoreless defensive struggle. An errant snap led to DE John Minehart rushing 20 yards for a score to give Germantown the lone score of the game and their 3rd consecutive PL title.

The 1982 Championship team ended a 56-year title drought with a 13-8 win over Bartram. Head Coach Charlie Hicks became the first African American HC to win a public league title in what was also his rookie year as head coach. Steve Duncan ran for 111 yards including a 62-yard touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Virgil Curtis led the defense with 16 tackles including a game saving quarterback pressure on 4th down forcing an incomplete pass with just 2:04 left in the game.

The school record for 11 wins in a season came during an undefeated 1999 season in which they were led by Public League MVP & All City 1st team honoree Angel Moultaire who doubled as an RB and Linebacker rushing for 130 yards & 3 touchdowns during a 29-6 win over Bok. In 11 games that team scored 352 points while only surrendering 53.
