PHILADELPHIA – Going into the fourth quarter, the Audenried Charter Rockets trailed undefeated Thomas Edison by two points. In that fourth quarter, the Rockets came up with two scores and multiple takeaways on defense to take down the Thomas Edison Owls 26-22 in a thrilling finish.
The scoring didn’t begin until the second quarter where Cashmere Thomas found Fortel Baker over the middle putting the Owls up 8-0. Audenried Charter followed that up with two scores of their own, both from Syncere Bryant. The kickoff return touchdown and the receiving touchdown put the Rockets up 14-8. The final score of the first half came on a 32 yard scramble by quarterback Cashmere Thomas, which after the successful two point conversion, put the Owls ahead 16-14 heading into halftime.
The third quarter’s only action came about midway through it, as the Owls were driving looking to go ahead by two scores before a hit on Ahmir Ponder knocked the ball out of his hands, giving Audenried possession at their own 5 yard line.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Marcus Velez began the scoring with a 55 yard connection with Kaseem Armstrong putting the Rockets back in the lead 20-16. Following that score, the Rockets’ defense came up with a fourth down stop in Thomas Edison territory setting up another score, this one coming on a 45 yard run from Sadeer Thorton which put Audenried Charter up 26-16.
Thomas Edison not too long after found an answer on another long pass to Fortel Baker that brought the Owls back within four points. The defense came up with a huge play on the next possession as Rockets’ punter Tyheed Rose’s punt was blocked, setting the Owls up deep in Rocket territory. Unfortunately for the Owls, a costly fumble by Cashmere Thomas gave the Rockets the ball right back with just over two minutes to play.
The Owls did have one more chance to get the ball back, and it seemed like they had as on a 3rd and 5, the Owls’ defense held the Rockets short of the line to gain. However on that play, a controversial targeting penalty was called, giving the Rockets a free 15 yards, a first down, and sealing the victory.
