Avonworth routes Aliquippa in dominate second half winning 23-7

The Aliquippa Quips faced off against the Avonworth Antalopes at Hienz Field but lost 23-7.

Each team’s first drives stalled as they both punted to start the game. Aliquippa would have a third down and thirteen and Marques Council Jr’s pass was intercepted by Avonworth’s Jaden Jones. Avonworth capitalized on the interception as Calder Mahan would put Avonworth on the board 3-0 to end the first quarter.

Aliquippa went three and out and punted the ball away. Avonworth once again drove down the field and Avonworth running back Dimitri Velisaris  broke a few tackles and rushed in for his first touchdown of the game. Avonworth went up 9-0 with one minute and eight seconds left in the first half.

The Quips would drive down the field and with seven seconds left on the clock Marques Council would find Lay Jones for the late touchdown. Renaldo Romero’s extra point would be good making it 9 to 7 heading into halftime.

Avonworth  received the second half kickoff and once again drove down the field and Velisaris walked in from 4 yards out to score his second touchdown of the game. Calder Mahan’s extra point was good and Avonworth increased their lead 16-9 with nine minutes and twenty three seconds left in the third quarter.

Aliquippa once again went three and out and once again punted it away. Avonworth drove down the field and Carson Bellinger  hit Luca Neal over the middle and Neal broke two tackles and took it to the house for his first touchdown of the game. Avonworth would extemnd their lead 23-7 with six minutes and seven seconds left to go in the third quarter.

Aliquippa went on their best drive of the game before Marques Council Jr. threw his second interception of the night. Cooper Scharding picked it off in the endzone for a touchback for the Lopes.

Avonworth’s punt was blocked by a host of Aliquiippa defenders setting up the quips first and goal from the Lopes 6-yard line. Marques Council Jr. rolled out to his right and threw his 3rd interception of the night as Achillies Heinold intercepted it for Avonworth’s second touchback of the game.

Avonworth took over first and 10 and converted on a few first down runs by Velisaris. Avonworth took a Knee to end the game. Avonworth won by the final score of 23-7.

Aliquippa is 1-1 on the season and they will be on the road against Mars with kickoff set for 7 o’clock. Avonworth moves to 3-0 on the season as they will be at home against Thomas Jefferson Hgih School with kickoff also set for 7’oclock.
