On Wednesday, Oct. 1, Baldwin High School released a letter on X written by Baldwin’s Board of Directors, stating the school’s football team is considering leaving the WPIAL.
“In response to our requests for change, for the governing bodies to partner with us to protect our athletes we’ve received mostly ridicule and negative press,” the letter wrote. “Unfortunately, in our opinion, that means we have no other choice but to consider moving our football program from the WPIAL and changing to independent status.”
The most recent team to leave the WPIAL is Butler, when the Golden Tornado left in 2020.
The football team’s last win came in 2023 in week 0 against Brashear. The Highlanders won that non-conference game 56-0. The team is now currently on a 25-game losing streak. The team also currently has a roster size of only 30 students.
Other local high school football teams that are independent from the WPIAL are Albert Gallatin, Butler, Uniontown, Carrick, Connellsville and Brownsville.
