Beaver runs past Western Beaver

Industry: Beaver scored 35 straight points en route to a 35-14 victory over Western Beaver Saturday afternoon in Industry.

Trailing 14-0 late in the first half, it seemed unlikely the Bobcats would win, let alone go on a 35-0 run to close the contest.

“We keep teaching the process, and the process is grinding out every single rep every single day in practice,” said Beaver head coach Cort Rowse. “We faced adversity today, but when you have a strong group of guys that believe in themselves, they won’t give up. These kids showed a lot of character; this was some of the guys’ first time out on the field. I’m so proud of how they handled the adversity and rose to the occasion.”

However, one play seemed to change the momentum in Beaver’s favor – two plays after Mikey Crawford caught a 27-yard touchdown from Jaivin Peel, the Bobcats – which had only mustered one first down via penalty to that point, got on the scoreboard when Amari Jackson took a short pass from Travis Clear and raced 59 yards cutting the Golden Beavers lead to 14-7 by halftime.

“We made a few adjustments at halftime, said Rowse. “We always have to have the answer in the second half; our guys know what the expectation is; the more they play together, the more everyone feels comfortable, and things start to gel. That touchdown before the half is what we’re always talking to our kids about: keep grinding out there and find ways to make plays. Teams that win will find ways to win; teams that lose will find a way to lose.”

As the second half got underway, Beaver drove into the red zone primarily off the legs of Brady Mayo, who ran out of the wildcat formation for much of the drive. However, Evan Baker had misfired from 25 yards out.

On the next snap from scrimmage, Beaver had recovered a fumble only to see the proceeding drive end as Crawford grabbed his second interception of the game.

Beaver’s offense would not be stopped for the rest of the game as they would score on their next four consecutive possessions, beginning with Qualan Cain’s 1-yard run with 2:17 to play in the third quarter, tying the contest at 14-14 following a 58-yard drive.

Cain would rush for a game-high 65 yards, including 56 in the second half, scoring all four Bobcat touchdowns in the second half. Drey Hall added 64 yards on 13 carries in the second half.

As a team, Beaver rushed for 169 yards in total after amassing only 15 yards on the ground in the first half.

“That second half was a credit to the amount of work these guys put in during the summer,” Rowse said. “The offseason conditioning we put these guys through was a pretty tough pace. We got a lot of participation, and you only get what you put in out of it, which showed in the second half.”

The Bobcats would then recover another fumble at the Golden Beaver’s 35-yard line, where Cain punched in his second score of the night to begin the final stanza, giving Beaver their first lead at 21-14.

Following a punt, Beaver put the game away by driving 70 yards in eight plays, all running plays as Cain scored his third touchdown on a 4-yard run.

After holding on downs, Cain scored again from four yards out with 2:18 to play to close the scoring.

Western Beaver had taken a first-quarter lead when Dorian McGhee took a slant pass for a 99-yard touchdown at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter.

It was the first positive offensive play for the Golden Beavers.

Late in the first half, Western Beaver increased their lead on Crawford’s 27-yard touchdown reception from Jaivin Peel, capping off a 6-play 59-yard drive.

McGhee caught two passes for 125 yards, while Crawford chipped in with three receptions for 40 yards.

Freshman quarterback Jaivin Peel threw for 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his first career start, including 228 in the first half.

Western Beaver ran only 16 plays in the second half, gaining only 62 yards. The Golden Beavers will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Shenango.

Beaver, meanwhile, has their home opener against Beaver Falls.

“Anytime you win in Western Pennsylvania, it’s huge,” concluded Rowse. “We talked before the game that this was the first chapter in the book we’re writing this season.”
