Bellwood’s Line Dominant in Shutout Win over Central

BELLWOOD-ANTIS — Behind a dominant offensive line, Bellwood rushed for 264 yards and three touchdowns to end their two game skid, beating Central 20-0.

“The Laurel Highlands has so many good teams…” Blue Devils head coach Nick Lovrich stated, and Bellwood got to play three of them to start the season: “starting with a 4A school and then playing Bishop McCort and a much improved Huntingdon – so it feels great to come out on top”. After beating Clearfield 28-21, Bellwood lost their next two games to #7 (2A) Bishop McCort and an undefeated Huntingdon, scoring only six points in both games. However, this week something changed for the Blue Devils in the second quarter, as their offensive line took control of the game.

With 8:27 left in the second quarter, the Blue Devils took control of the ball on their own 15 yard line. This followed a promising Central drive that stalled after two incomplete passes on third and fourth down. To this point in the game, the Bellwood offense had only accumulated 34 yards in the first frame. The Blue Devils drove 85 yards and 11 plays which was capped off by an Alex McCartney 7 yard run with 2:01 left in the half.  From this point, Bellwood rushed for another 137 yards on the ground in the second half along with two more touchdowns.

Bellwood’s offense would not need to score again, as their defense only allowed Central to cross midfield once in the second half. Coach Lovrich said that his defense “did the little things right. We were more sure tacklers, our secondary covered really well”. A veteran secondary for Bellwood only allowed 81 passing yards, and CB Colin Gibbons forced an interception in the second half as well. The Central backs could not find much room either, only rushing for 56 yards on 26 attempts, good for a 2.1 yards per carry.

The Dragons struggled to generate offense, scoring just 20 points over their last three weeks. Much like last week, Central’s defense played well for most of the game, forcing 2 turnovers on downs and one fumble, recovered by DL Ethan Stern. The offense started out strong as well, getting into the red zone early in the second quarter, driving 52 yards, before two incomplete passes would end the drive. Central only gained 57 yards in the second half, largely due to a strong Bellwood front seven that consistently made contact in the backfield. QB Carter Schenk, who stepped into the full-time role following an injury to Jesse Muthler, completed 64% of his passes, while gaining 131 total yards.

“An all around team effort” according to Coach Lovrich put the Blue Devils back in the win column. Bellwood entered the 2025 season with championship aspirations, that seemed to be fading away. However, led by a physical defense, veteran offensive line, and a talented backfield, Bellwood proved that they can take over a game. Central came into the season well aware of the rebuilding that lay ahead, and looked to use this season to develop their young talent. Tonight, new receivers caught 6 passes for the Dragons, who are gaining valuable experience to compete in a tough league like the Laurel Highlands.

Next week the Dragons will return home to face Bishop Guilfoyle (2-1), while the Blue Devils will write another chapter in the Backyard Brawl as they travel to take on rival Tyrone (3-1).
