Dante Paul earned his first career win as head coach, leading Berlin-Brothersvalley to a week one victory over Claysburg-Kimmel 35-7 at Bulldog Stadium.

Berlin capitalized off of every Claysburg mistake to open 2025 off with a win. Three interceptions and a fumble recovery off a punt is exactly what Berlin prides themselves in.

“Everyone calls them turnovers, but we like to call it takeaways and we take pride in taking the football away,” Berlin Head Coach Dante Paul explained. “We protected the ball on offense and a lot of times if you win the takeaway battle, good things happen and we ended up capitalizing.”

The Bulldogs began the game with the ball and started to drive down the field, but Berlin’s defense got an interception from Mason Hoyman.

These two defenses battled for the next few drives and right after Claysburg got a big stop on third down, they dropped the punt and Corbin Kordell recovered it for Berlin to take over with great field position.

Shortly after to begin the second quarter, sophomore Carter Durst punched it in from one yard out, giving them the lead.

Durst followed with a big tackle for loss to force a punt and the Mountaineers drove right down the field again. Brady Janidlo concluded the drive with a pass to Kordell, who then made multiple defenders miss the tackle and scored from 20 yards out.

Claysburg wasn’t out of it yet as Bulldog quarterback Mason Campagna made multiple defenders miss and kept the play alive and then hit Jacob Herline for a 42 yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs would then conclude the half with a big sack from Remington Diehl to gain momentum heading into the second half, trailing Berlin 14-7.

Despite the momentum, Berlin got a pick six from Kordell quickly after halftime and the Mountaineers never looked back.

“We get pride on turnovers and we put it in our head all week,” Berlin junior back Corbin Kordell stated. “He threw it to number 11, I jumped it, and took it to the house. That’s what we pride ourselves on, takeaways and touchdowns on defense.”

That pick six was truly game changing and that capped off a night full of mistakes from the Bulldogs.

“We cannot turn the ball over like that,” Claysburg Head Coach Chuck Kassick said. “We’ve got pretty good athletes. We’ve gotta take care of the ball, get them the ball, and do better up front.”

“It’s my fault, I did not prepare them well enough. We’re going to get back after it next week and fix some things and we’ll see what we do next week.”

Following that, Berlin scored off a one yard rushing touchdown from Seth Kimmel. That wasn’t it just yet as Kimmel would one up that with a 48 yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Kimmel finished with 99 rushing yards on just 10 carries.

Berlin knew it was going to be tough with an offensive threat like Campagna, but they managed to contain him inside the pocket and force him to make throws, leading to a handful of interceptions.

“I gotta tip my hat to Coach Kassick and Mason Campagna,” Coach Paul said. “He’s a heck of an athlete. We weren’t getting to him at all in the first half and we like to call him backyard football where he just scrambles around and finds someone. And he was executing it.”

“At halftime we drew that blitz up there, bringing one of our backers and we just capitalized off it.”

Berlin will be home next week against Mount Union and Claysburg will travel to Northern Bedford.

Key Performer : Berlin sophomore receiver and defensive back Corbin Kordell reeled in two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 12 yards and taking an interception back for a touchdown.
