BOILING SPRINGS, PA – The crowds were roaring on Friday night at Ecker Field, where Bermudian Springs was able to survive Trinity and take home the district 3 class 3A championship for the first time in over 25 years.

Bermudian Springs received to start the game, and they did not waste the opportunity. Lane Hubbard, off a 1-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown, was the first to light up the scoreboard. 6 minutes into the game, the Eagles were already up by 7. The shamrocks got the ball back and worked hard to make it to the goal line, where Jacob Ness ran it 4 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams turned it over on downs in the second quarter, but when Bermudian Springs got the ball back, the Shamrocks forced a fumble, and Amil Way ran 46 yards for a touchdown. Trinity’s lead expanded to 14-7 with 3 minutes left in the half, but neither team were done scoring. After a pass interference call and a Trinity offensive line who was forcing Hubbard to scramble in the pocket, Colby Watkins found the endzone on a 5-yard play to tie the game. To take the lead, Trinity’s Kieran Finegan kicked a 40-yard field goal to secure a 17-14 lead at the half.

The second half started off on a bang when Trinity’s Christian Joy scored a 36-yard touchdown after a long kick return. Bermudian Springs also had a long return and were able to score on a 5-yard pass from Lane Hubbard to Dylan Hubbard. The PAT was blocked, however, making the score 24-20 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter. At this point, the game had gotten chippy and they were multiple unsportsmanlike penalties called on both teams. Following the Bermudian Springs touchdown, the Eagles were able to get the ball back from an interception caught by Brayden Heller. The Shamrocks’ Christian Joy would do the same to the Eagles, setting up Kieran Finegan for a 30-yard field goal to make the lead 27-20. Bermudian Springs would strike back on the next kickoff rerun, when Eddie Sebright went 91 yards to the house to tie the game at 27.

It got down to the wire in the fourth quarter, and neither team was ready to give up. But, a minute after the quarter started, Trinity had to settle for a 42 yard field goal to take the lead at 30-27. Trinity would have more chances to get the ball down the field, but they were stopped every time. Then, with 6 minutes left, Jack Gautsch went 5 yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles up 34-30. Although they fought hard, Trinity was not able to put more points on the scoreboard, and Bermudian Springs won the championship with a final score of 34-30.

With the win, Bermudian Springs will advance to the first round of state playoffs, where they will have to take on the 12-0 Danville Ironmen next weekend.
