Another record-setting night at Crispin Field.

BERWICK- The Berwick Bulldogs used a tenacious defense and a formidable rushing attack that produced over 400 yards of offense, so much so that the ‘Dawgs did not attempt a single pass all night to eliminate the Hanover Area Hawkeyes from the PIAA District 2 3A playoffs by a score of 49-9 before a moderate group of fans at historic Crispin Field on a windy and chilly Halloween night.

“Mr.Excitement” Ty-Mere Wilkerson had another record breaking night running the ball to the tune of 383 yards and set two new school records in program history. First by breaking Brant Quick’s 21 year old record for most yards in a single season and then he proceeded to establish a new milestone for most touchdowns in a season.

The game did not start out as most expected, as the Bulldogs forced a punt on the Hawkeyes opening drive. A bad snap around midfield for the home team gave possession back to Hanover Area and the drove deep into Berwick territory, but the drive stalled at the eleven and they settled on a 29 yard field goal by Chance Hall to take the lead at 3-0.

Berwick settled down their second drive and from the Bulldog 47, Wilkerson found a hole off the right side and outran the Hanover defenders to the end zone for a 8-3 lead with just three seconds left in the opening quarter, that run broke Quick’s record as Wilkerson just needed 22 yards coming into the contest. Wilkerson also converted the two-point conversion.

The next time Berwick touched the ball, they needed a gutsy fourth-and-two conversion from inside their own 30 to keep the drive alive. Quarterback Brady Cleaver was able to snatch a high snap to pick up enough yardage to keep the drive alive. When the got to midfield, Wilkerson took care of the rest buy busting another scoring run off the left side to make it 15-3 with 8:39 left in the second quarter. Caleb Yost connected on his school-record 45th consecutive PAT.

Hanover mounted a sustain drive the next time they had the ball, but Brock Simms was johnny-on-the-spot when he picked off a tipped Logan Richards pass at the Berwick 24 that ended the threat. The Hanover offense found it tough going trying to pass the ball in the windy conditions combined with the stout Bulldog defense allowed Richardson to throw for 17 yards before halftime on just six completions.

With just seconds to go before the teams would head to the locker room, Wilkerson picked up his third touchdown of the half from six yards out making a the score 22-3 at intermission.

“We are process oriented with how we approach games each week.” head coach C.J Curry said of his team. ” We made some mistakes early with penalties, but we believe in on another, but we did correct those, but we cannot have that going deeper in the playoffs.” He concluded.

Hanover opened the second half with a surprised onside kick, but Berwick did recover it and proceeded to score again this time Caleb May dashed 43 yards to the end zone making the score 28-3 as the point-after was blocked leaving the score 28-3 with still over eleven minutes left in the quarter.

Berwick would force another Hawkeye turnover when Alex Estella picked off a Richardson pass. A few plays later. Wilkerson punched it in from four yards out increasing the lead to 35-3.

Wilkerson then broke the scoring record by crossing the goal line from 32 yards out. The touchdown gave him 39 on the season.

Hanover would get a touchdown in the fourth quarter as Richardson connected with Dawin Downey from 4 yards out making it a 42-9 with 10:13 left in the game. Downey finish the night with 41 yards on 6 touches. Hanover was out-gained 405 to 195 in the contest.

Wilkerson the ripped off a 57 yard run, that was followed by a 25 yard Brady Cleaver touchdown run to close out the scoring for the contest. This was the second time these two teams met this season. Berwick won the regular season by a score of 56-19 at Hanover on September 19th.

Berwick (11-0) will now try to get their first district title since 2013, as they face perennial power Scranton Prep (6-5) next week. The Cavaliers shutout (9-2) Wyoming Area Friday night 42-0.
