Altoona – Bishop Guilfoye held Tyrone to 111 yards of total offense, and knocked off the Golden Eagles 26-0 Saturday night at Mansion Park Stadium.

The Marauders used a complete team effort to win their fourth consecutive contest, building a 10-0 halftime lead before adding a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

“I thought we should have finished some drives in the first half in the short yardage stuff,” said Bishop Guilfoyle head coach Justin Wheeler. “We had a few guys out tonight, and some of you guys made some mistakes, but they didn’t in the second half. So I was happy with our performance throughout the game and especially our defense.”

Despite being a little beat up, as they’ve had all season, Jake Kissell helped lead the way as the senior stepped up into the tailback position following a season-ending injury to last season’s leading rusher, Taurean Consiglio, on August 30th.

“It feels great,” Kissell said. “I feel like, as a team, we had a lot of new guys coming in this year. I feel like we’re getting better every week. We’re currently dealing with some injuries, with Taurean and Hayden out. Those were some key guys that were gonna ball out this year. We’re trying to get them healthy as quickly as possible, but we have guys stepping up right now. We’re getting better every weekend. I’m happy with how we played tonight, and I’m ready for next week.”

Kissell rushed for a game-high 116 yards on 20 carries, and also completed 5-of-7 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.

“It was tough, I mean, playing as a tight end last year, blocking every play for Taurean, it was definitely an adjustment being the main runner on the team,” Kissell said. “It’s been an adjustment I’ve had to make. I used to run the ball back when I played a while ago. For the most part, during my high school career, I played tight end. Running the ball just came a little too easily to me. We got other guys stepping up running the ball as well, and they’re opening up holes for me, so it’s great.”

Late in the second quarter, the Marauders broke the stalemate when Jack Gioiosa caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Justin Wheeler following a 3-play 47-yard drive. Gioiosa caught a 32-yard pass from Wheeler to set up the score.

Taking over at the Tyrone 42-yard line with 13 seconds to play in the half, a pass interference call against the Golden Eagles allowed Carter Boland to boot a 41-yard field goal as time expired.

I thought we had two significant moments in the game, you know, getting that field goal before half, putting us up two scores was the first one,” Wheeler said. “Carter Bolden’s one of the best kickers in the state. No doubt putting them off in the end zone, starting at twenty, and the next time we get inside 30, we have a chance for points. I thought going up two scores was great for our momentum, and then in the second half, you need something to get a little spark. We love our defense, and Rocco Cacciotti  has just been getting better every week.”

The Bishop Guilfoyle defense continued to dominate Tyrone in the second half as Cacciotti tackled Caleb Whitby in the end zone for a safety.

The Marauders then punched the ensuing drive with Jake Kissell throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Connor Okonak, capping a 6-play 57-yard drive.

“Yeah, a little Tebow pass to Connor,” Kissell said. “I’ll take a passing touchdown, because they were selling out on the run. In the last play, we ran a 40-yard run. They thought I was gonna run it in, and we were in the next play, and they stuffed me at the line. We’re like Tebow pass, and it’s perfect. I came out, ran it to perfection, and thankfully he caught it.”

Kissell also had a 34-yard gain on the drive.

Earlier in the game, Bishop Guilfoyle was stopped on a pair of 4th-and-1 situations at the Golden Eagles’ 28 and 39-yard lines, respectively.

Jack Gioiosa then intercepted Eli Woomer, and after a 34-yard pass from Kissell to Tyson Lestochi and a 34-yard gain on the ground by Keegan Hewitt, Hewitt scored on a 1-yard run with 6:54 to play, closing the scoring.

Hewitt chipped in on the ground, rushing for 60 yards on 11 carries.

Bishop Guilfoyle improves to 5-1 on the season and will travel to Bellwood-Antis next Friday night.

“We’re drawing some things up in the dirt because, you know, we had three or four guys out tonight,” concluded Wheeler. “Hoping these guys get healthy and we get them back. But we love our effort. We love our guys. I’m not sure, but it’s been three or four weeks since our first team has given up a point on defense. So you know they’ve been playing really well, and we thought our offense had done enough to win games. So, yeah, I like where we’re at right now. We like our chances.”

Reid Starr led Tyrone with 54 yards rushing on six carries, and the Golden Eagles will look to bounce back next Friday when they host Huntingdon.
