The Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders proved their number one ranking in Single-A with a dominating 41-7 win over the Bellefonte Red Raiders. Chase Kissell and Hamilton Gates led the Marauder offense tonight as they both went off. Gates finished the night with four touchdowns, including 159 receiving yards and 67 rushing yards. Kissell finished the night with 193 passing yards with three passing touchdowns and a pick six.
This game really got out of hand early as the Marauders went into the half with a 41-0 lead. The Kissell-Gates connection met up for three touchdowns together and the Red Raiders could not stop them. They are a dominant duo, but there is more to it than that, according to Head Coach Justin Wheeler.
Coach Wheeler said, “I think they are just really good friends. I think our wide receiver core too is that good. You can’t just double Hamilton because Braden Reilly last week went off. He is one of the best receivers in the conference as well. If you have guys like that, it’s hard to double against us, but they are all really good friends. The chemistry between them is really good and you see it paying off on the field.”
Teammate Kissell was impressed with his team “firing off of all cylinders tonight” after struggling early last week. To add on what Coach Wheeler said, Kissell says that Gates and Reilly “make his job easy” and it is really showing each week on the football field.
It wasn’t just the offense wasn’t the only thing that impressed tonight as the starting defense pitched a shutout tonight. Being able to stop a running team like Bellefonte was the gameplan according to Coach Wheeler and the team executed that real well.
Coach Wheeler said, “We knew they like to run the ball, especially to the perimeter. We really stressed this week with our defensive ends, we think they’ve been playing real well and I thought Connor McElheny early on was running down jet sweeps and going sideline to sideline, which was incredible tonight. Then you got Jake Kissell on the other side who seemed to pick it up in the second quarter. Our defense played really well and I think our defensive ends really shined.”
One big time play that was made on defense was from Chase Kissell. Normally interceptions are bad for a quarterback, but this one also plays a big role on defense. Bellefonte was driving down the field and got into the red zone, but Kissell picked off a pass from Liam Halterman and ran it all the way back for over 70 yards.
Kissell said, “The guy was rolling out and my defensive end Connor (McElheny) hit him and I saw the ball in the air, I flew up, and I caught it. I was chugging the whole way down the field and at the 10 yard line I wasn’t sure if I would make it, but I pushed through and got the pick six.”
Taurean Consiglio also ran for a touchdown tonight.
Not a whole lot went well for Bellefonte as their offense struggled to move down the field. In the first quarter, they fumbled twice, which gave the Marauders the ball in Red Raider territory each time. The one time they got in the red zone, an interception was thrown.
In the fourth quarter, Aden Howell was able to get in the end zone to put Bellefonte on the board, but that was it from the Red Raiders. With another tough game next week, they will need to erase the sloppy turnovers and be more effective on moving the ball down field.
Next week, Bellefonte will travel to Clearfield and Bishop Guilfyole will travel to Huntingdon.
