Dominance. That is a word that comes up so often when discussing Bishop Guilfoyle in most sports, but none more than football. In the last 14 years, the Marauders have now eight district championships and played in 13 of the matchups. Tonight, Bishop Guilfoyle notched their fourteenth straight District 6 Championship appearance and added their ninth title since 2012, as they blew out Juniata Valley 62-6.

The Marauders played well on both sides of the ball, scoring 49 points in the first half and holding Juniata Valley scoreless for the first time since Week 3, when the Hornets played Glendale. Through the first two quarters, the Bishop Guilfoyle defense forced Juniata Valley into third-and-long, as six of the Hornets’ seven first-half possessions were fewer than three total plays. These quick defensive stands gave BG a 14:49 to 9:11 time-of-possession advantage before the break. While Guilfoyle largely dominated wire-to-wire in this game, the turning point was at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter. One play after scoring, BG defensive back Tyson Lestochi intercepted the Hornets’ QB Jett Rand and returned it 30 yards for a score, swinging the lead from 21 to 28. The Marauders added 21 more points in the final nine minutes of the second quarter following this.

While Guilfoyle’s defense was impressive, their offense had one of their more balanced games of the season. Scoring nine total touchdowns (two passing, six rushing, one defensive), BG amassed their most points in a game since Week 3 of 2015, when they scored 70 against Central Cambria. With 237 yards rushing, the Marauders matched their weekly average of 231 yards, as BG found themselves in good field position all night. That elite field positioning helped Guilfoyle score on eight straight drives from the 4:36 mark of the first quarter onward. Jake Kissell scored three of these touchdowns on two one-yard runs and one five-yard run. Kissell also added 107 yards on 16 carries, good for 6.7 yards per carry.

For Juniata Valley, it was a tough way to end a fantastic season, which will end with a 10-3 record, a six win improvement from last year. The Hornets played their way to their best record since 2021, when they also finished 10-3. Star RB Andrew Clark was a workhorse, carrying the ball 20 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. His 114 scrimmage yards represented 89% of Juniata Valley’s offensive production tonight, as he left it all on the field.

While some may expect Bishop Guilfoyle to be used to winning at the highest level, the Marauders head coach Justin Wheeler is not taking it for granted: “We as the coaches and these players, they spend a lot of time with us and we do it all just to get to these moments, so you can get here and enjoy the moment… I love it, I love being a part of it.” Bishop Guilfoyle deserves to celebrate this one, but now their attention will turn to their next goal, defending their 1A State Championship title, which will start now, as they will begin preparations for a tough District 8 opponent in Westinghouse.

Next week, Bishop Guilfoyle (11-2) will take on Westinghouse (7-4) in the PIAA Playoffs Second Round (Location & Time TBD).
