Bishop Guilfoyle (6) vs Clairton (7)

Check back for updates from PFN Editor Chris Kucharski for observations during the game.

3:47pm: Scoreboard never had zeroes on the clock as some Clairton players were penalized at the end. Refs just declared it was done. A great game with a sad ending as some of the Bears couldn’t accept the loss with dignity.  Hats off to both teams for playing hard, but you have to remember the sportsmanship  that’s part of the game.

3:39pm: On fourth down, Ryan Williams finds Jamie Hines in the end zone but can’t get a foot in bounds and the Bears turn it over  on downs at the eight yardline. Clairton has only one time out. This game came down to conversions. BG made one. Clairton made zero.  Bishop Guilfoyle is the Class A state champion.

3;36pm: Clairton takes a timeout at the BG six. Third and goal. 1:07 remaining. Talk of a possible FG for a team doesn’t have a kicker.

3:28pm Jyleel hall intercepts a Chadbourne pass on a screen attempt and the Bears get it back at the BG 46.  Gigantic play by Bears defense.

3:23pm: After a three and out by BG, Clairton moves to midfield but comes up short on 4th and 11.  Pass is complete but short of first down. Marauders take over at their own 39. Don’t agree with going for it. Still too much time and Bears have three timeouts.

3:15pm. We were just commenting in the press box how Clairton has not broken one and there goes Lamont Wade 64 yards. However, the two-point run is stopped, Conversions have been gigantic in this game. Bishop Guilfoyle still up 19-18.

3:06pm: Sam McCloskey shows some speed and scores a 12-yard TD run. BG goes for two (not sure why) and a penalty after the completion gave the Mauraders a second chance. They decided to kick the extra point and second bad snap of the game keeps it at 7. Don’t forget. Clairton always goes for two. Bishop Guilfoyle 19-12, late third quarter.

3;03pm: Guilfoyle fakes the punt on 4th and 1 and Evan Chadbourne picks up 40 yards.  Game just had a major shift.

3:00pm Andrew Irwin sacks Ryan Williams on fourth down to stop Bears’ drive. Guilfoyle takes over at the 30.

2:49pm: Clairton gets a big stop on 4th down. Guilfoyle ran the option with the tailback as the QB.  If he pitches it, six points for the Marauders.

2:47pm: Guilfoyle converts some third downs but now has a fourth and 2 at the Bears 10 and will use their first timeout.

2:42pm: BG quarterback Brandon Chadbourne just competed his sixth pass without an incompletion. He is having a solid game.

2:40pm: Bishop Guilfoyle gets the ball to start the second half.

2;17pm: Controversy at Hershey. Scoreboard showed zero timeouts for Clairton so Bishop Guilfoyle took a knee. Turns out the Bears had one left and forced the Marauders to kick. 14.3 seconds left. all at Clairton 48.

2:14pm: Joshua Yasulitis intercepts Ryan Williams pass in the end zone to stop the Clairton drive.  Looks like BG will have the lead at half.

2:05pm: Guilfoyle bounces right back in it. The screen pass set everything up, but Chadbourne broke a tackle at the 10 yard line and easily makes it to paydirt. Kick is good and BG has their first lead of the dday. Extra points could be huge in this game. Marauders 13-12.

2:02pm: Marauders use a big screen play to D.J. Kitt to get in the red zone for the second time today.

1:57pm; BG has to be kicking themselves. Clairton runs a double reverse and Aaron Mathews throws to Lamont Wade 25 yards downfield and the Maruders have it covered, but somehow Wade comes down with the ball and trots to the end zone.  Clairton now up 12-6.

1:53pm: Marauders put a great drive together and had to go 95 yards, but a 3rd and 10 pass from Brandon Chadbourn to Sam McCloskey finds the end zone.  Bad snap on the extra point. We are all tied 6-6 and momentum on the side of Guilfoyle.

1:52pm: Bishop Guilfoyle putting together a nice drive. In the red zone for the first time today.

1:39pm: The Bears strike first with Aaron Mathews making a great catch in the end zone for a 20-yard score from Ryan Williams. Mathews went up high over two BG defenders. Might have gotten away with a little push-off but Bears lead 6-0.

1:37pm: End of 1st quarter. Clairton driving and will begin the second quarter at the BG 20.  0-0 score.

1:31pm: Three and out for BG. They play field position, but punt goes through end zone.

1:29pm: Clairton goes for it on 4th and 2 in at their own 35 and are stopped. Not a good decision considering Guilfoyle has been getting penetration up front.

1:27pm: Guilfoyle gets one first down but is stopped on 3rd and short and forced to punt. Both teams have come up with big stops.

1:23pm: Clairton has already used all three of their timeouts.

1:21pm: Penalty negates a first down gain for Clairton. Forced to quick kick. Good stop by Guilfoyle.

1:16pm: Guilfoyle had a big return on the punt, but it was negated by too many men on the field.  Then another mistake by BG with offsides gives Bears a first down on 4th and 2. Two big mistakes by the Marauders.

1:15pm: Clairton goes three and out. Some sure tackling by the Maurders.

1:11pm: This will be a battle of Clairton’s speed vs. Guilfoyle’s size and strength.

1:10pm: Clairton has won the toss. They will receive.

1:03pm: Both teams are on the field. Herhsey 2014 is about to begin.

12:55pm: Weather is cloudy with temperature at 37 degrees. Wind are 10 to 15 mph going from west to east towards the scoreboard at Hershey.

12:40pm – Bishop Guilfoyle is the away  team and will wear all white uniforms. It is their first appearance in the state championship game. Only one other District 6 game has won a state title (1999).

Clairton will be the home team and will wear all black uniforms. The Bears have won four PIAA Class A titles (2009-2012).
