Bishop McCort scored on six straight drives and forced three turnovers on their way to a 46-18 victory over Bishop Guilfoyle, securing the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championship. The Crushers’ impressive defense held Bishop Guilfoyle to just 80 rushing yards on 31 attempts (2.6 yards per attempt), and their offense capitalized on their chunk plays (7 plays of 15+ yards, scoring on 2 of those) to win a game that was never in doubt. Bishop McCort’s defense held the Marauders to just 6 points in the first half, their lowest first-half score of the season.
“They throw a lot at you offensively, and we just picked it apart, and did what we needed to do,” Coach Smith said following his defense’s smothering performance. The Crushers’ defensive line held Bishop Guilfoyle to just 80 rushing yards, 167 yards less than the Marauders’ average rushing yards per game. McCort’s front seven controlled the game, keeping BG behind the sticks all night, as the Marauders were forced into three third downs of longer than 10 yards to go, where they were unable to score on any of those drives. Not only this, but the defense forced three turnovers, a fumbled punt return, along with two pivotal interceptions in the second half. The Crushers’ offense took advantage of the field positioning, turning it into 12 points in only three offensive plays on the heels of the turnovers.
Coach Smith noted his team’s six-drive touchdown streak: “Defensively, that’s a really good football team we played, and we knew we would have struggles with them, but once we got things moving, we were able to do that.” On those six drives, stemming from the 1:41 mark of the first to the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter, they amassed 263 yards, 80% of their total offensive output. Earlier this week, Coach Wheeler warned that when “their offense is balanced, it’s tough to stop,” and it was very balanced tonight. The Crushers’ run game went for 234 yards on 6 yards per carry, garnering the attention of the defense, before McCort took the top off the defense on a few deep balls from Bentley Bainey. Bainey was a force tonight, throwing for four touchdowns and playing textbook coverage down the field, resulting in multiple pass deflections and an interception. The Crushers’ impressive play tonight will definitely be something they look to carry into the playoffs.
Bishop Guilfoyle was in this spot last season, when they lost to a very good Penn Cambria team in the playoffs, before the Marauders ripped off six wins on their way to a PIAA Class 1A State Championship title. One issue for Bishop Guilfoyle was their penalties, some of which stalled drives, as they drew 9 flags for 75 yards. However, a bright spot for BG came at the end of the third quarter when Justin Wheeler found Evan Schimminger for a 78-yard touchdown. The Marauders finished the game with 174 yards passing, their second most of the season. Look for BG to use the passing game more as they enter the playoffs.
“Bishop McCort has meant the world to me as a football player. I grew up in the program… That program is a part of my family. We were determined to get things back to where they should be, and we absolutely have done that this year,” Coach Smith reflected on the win. Bishop McCort made history tonight in more ways than one, as they beat BG for the first time since 2012, won the Laurel Highlands Championship, and completed an undefeated regular season for a team that was 3-7 just two seasons ago. As for Bishop Guilfoyle, they will continue to strive for excellence, with their sights set on their third State Championship in the last five seasons. Friday night’s win will be remembered for more than just the yards and turnovers, but for the years of effort by McCort’s coaches and players, which put them in the position to make history.
Next week, Bishop McCort (10-0) will take on Bald Eagle (5-5) in the District 6 Class 2A Playoffs, while Bishop Guilfoyle will take on Purchase Line (3-7) in the District 6 Class 1A Playoffs.
