BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University Huskies opened up their 2024 football season Thursday night at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium before a enthusiastic crowd to the tune of a 35-7 victory over the visitors of Fairmont State Fighting Falcons from West Virginia in a PSAC/Mountain East Conference Cross over game.

Behind quarterback Ben Ries, a fifth year player, who threw for 182 yards on 12-of-18 passing and two touchdowns a long with a potent running game that pick up an additional 302 yards on 55 carries giving the home team 466 yards of total offense, while the Husky defense allowed just 239 to the Falcons.

Bloomsburg used a 53 yard drive on eight plays to open up the scoring with Ries scoring from 15 yards out for a 7-0 lead with just 42 seconds left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead the drive took 4:08. Brendan McGonigle added the PAT.

The next time Bloom got the ball it ended with a one yard Matt Buchman touchdown capping off an impressive 15 play 70 yard drive took almost eight minutes off the clock to make it 14-0 with 6:48 left before halftime. Buchman finished the night as the Huskies leading rusher with 94 yards on 15 tallies and that one score.

On the ensuing Falcon drive, the visitors cut the lead in half at 14-7 as quarterback Will Adkins connected with Kobe Harris for a five yard scoring pass at the 4:31 mark of the second quarter. The drive went six plays and covered 67 yards. Emmanuel Richardson tacked on the extra-point.

Griffen-Batchler would haul in his second touchdown on a beautifully thrown ball by Ries as his receiver made a diving catch in the end zone for a 34 yard score just 3:05 into the third quarter on a 3 play 55 yard drive that only took 1:21 to complete and gave the home team a 28-7 lead.

“We ran the ball physically and the defense came up some key stops in the red zone.” Coach Frank Sheptock stated after the game. “We were really diverse on the offensive side of the ball with Ries being a fifth year player and has some great athletic ability.” He concluded.

Running back Riley Parker got into the act with an explosive 39 yard touchdown run at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter, again with a short 6 play drive that covered 70 yards in just 3:19.
