District VI Single A Playoffs Round 1

Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs at Conemaugh Valley BlueJays

For about five minutes Saturday it looked like the visiting Bulldogs might go home with a win. Claysburg-Kimmel came out running and throwing getting large chunks of yardage. When Cole Claycomb caught a screen pass from Caleb Oakes and darted through the CV defense for a forty yard touchdown, it appeared CK had scored first.  But a block in the back took the points off the scoreboard. Conemaugh Valley Coach Matt Kent called a timeout to give the defense a quick scolding. The next play the Bulldogs fumbled and junior Matt Jasper who had a big day recovered the fumble. The next 43 minutes it was almost all BlueJays.

CV senior Logan Kent raced 80 yards down the right sideline on the next play and the BlueJays never looked back. Kent would break the single season rushing record for the school of 1893 by Brandon Galasso early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were unable to respond and went three and out. They punted and CV senior Nick Heltzel did his best “Devin Hester” impersonation, running around and by defenders for a 70 yard touchdown. But a block in the back brought it back. Conemaugh Valley was undeterred and drove 62 yards for the games second score, a 40 yard run by Kent again over the right side. On their next possession the Bulldogs drove into BlueJays territory as the first quarter ended, but turned it over on downs. Conemaugh Valley would drive 62 yards again, this time it was Nick Heltzel scoring on the counter from 3 yards out.

It took the Bulldogs just one minute to answer back. The Oaks to Claycomb combination hooked up again. This time on a bubble screen. CV led 23-6 halfway through the second quarter. The BlueJays scored even quicker, taking just 13 seconds off the clock. After a failed onside kick, Nick Heltzel raced 48 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter. The Bulldogs drove inside the CV ten on their next drive, the big play was a 47 yard run by Cole Claycomb. Three plays later the Bulldogs fumbled and Logan Kent recovered. Both teams would turn it over on downs from the CV 33. At the half it was BlueJays 29 Bulldogs 6.

The BlueJays would go right down the field to start the second half. Kent would score his third touchdown of the game, from 40 yards out again. The rest of the quarter was sloppy. The Bulldogs turning it over three times, twice on downs and once on a fumble. The BlueJays loss fumbles on both their possessions. The fourth quarter started with Nick Heltzel scoring his third touchdown from 75  yards away.

The mercy rule was now in effect. Both teams would turn it over on downs on their next possessions. Bulldog sophomore Anthony McGeary would score the games last touchdown in the final minutes with a beautiful run down the left sideline. The final score was BlueJays 42 Bulldogs 13.
